Default House for Snowy

When I bought Snowy at 5-6 months he had only ever been in a small tank, with no opportunity to climb. He's quite a big hamster, and I don't think he is quite as bright as my previous ones! I had him in a Gabber-type cage, but have now moved him into a single-level cage with bars where I can watch him and he can see out.

This seems boring, and I am wondering whether to get a larger cage. However, I am worried in case he falls, never being used to climbing. I have one two-storey cage - a bit on the small side, although probably the same total size as what he is in now, and the three-storey one Peanut had. I really don't think I'd trust him in that. I am wondering whether to try Snowy in the two-storey one to see whether he can cope with the tubes and climbing. If he manages that I may get a Savic Cambridge or Savic Peggy after Christmas.

What do you think is best?

Which internet suppliers do you find best for cages? I prefer not to go on Ebay.

Hi Ann,

I'm no expert but I would say go for it with the double or triple tier, at least as a trial. Its a hamsters natural instinct to climb and he will probably love all the new exploring he can do, if he struggles at first he will soon learn I'm sure.

As for buying online, I only have Rotastak but I have looked at lots (and lots and lots ) and the cheapest place I can find for various cages is http://www.netpetshop.co.uk I have bought a couple of times from them and they are very quick delivery and its free delivery over £49.

I don't think Snowy is quite normal. Even though he has bars, he shows absolutely no interest in trying to climb them, so I am leaving him in the barred single-level cage unless he show some interest in climbing. He seems a happy little thing. I wonder if you get dyspraxic hamsters in the same way that I am a dyspraxic owner!
