You definitely do. Not sure where people got the idea that you don't but this is a common thing people have said! Unfortunately, the packaging for play sand can definitely let in ants and such which means play sand has to be sterilized aka baked and then sifted for the safety of hamsters.

Re: Sandtastik play sand. Safe for hamsters? Reviews?
Did a search for sand and found this thread. Currently using (and blowing through) an $$$ bag of reptisand. Hammies love it but I can't afford multiple bags a month. Remembered reading that others use play sand. I bake the bran I raise grubs for my chickens with at 300 for 20 mintues. Is it the same protocol for baking hammie sand? A $5 bag at Lowes is much more affordable than the stuff we've been using. Just want to make sure it's safe and how to sterilize it. Also, I saw mention of sifting...for what? What type of sieve do you use? The finest mesh or is a medium one fine?

Sifting would generally be to get out any bugs, pebbles, etc that may be inside the bags when you buy play sand. I'm not too sure on the best possible mesh for sifting, but others may have more ideas on that.
I tend to see 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes(sometimes 20-30 minutes) as what people bake their sand at, although time might depend on how thick of a layer of sand you're baking at once.
