Default Savic bristol cage

In view of what's happened with my little robo, I have decided to make a new setup with the cages. I will only have two hamsters, but space for four cages, so I'm altering the layout, and I want to start fresh so there's no reminders. The old (I say old, I only bought them in the summer!) cages are going on eBay and I've been looking at new ones. I have decided on a Savic bristol for my Winter White boy, as I've always liked the look of it, but is it big enough for a Syrian as well? The Syrian in question is 2 years old and not as active as he once was. Or what about the Cambridge? And will a big trixie wheel fit in them? Any other suggestions are welcome, I've not been on here in weeks, so I'm out of the loop with cages, but I don't want anything huge and flat, like the ruffy or alaska as space is an issue, and glass tanks are a definite no as their too heavy, bulky and breakable.

What about the zoozone 2? Zoo Zone Small Animal Cage Large on Sale | Free UK Delivery | PetPlanet.co.uk

Or make a bin cage?

I don't have any experience with the cages you mentioned so i can't really say anything bout them. Sorry.

I've heard bad things about the savic bristol I think. What about going for plastic tank style cages to minimise the risk of escapes after your recent problems?

What bad things have you heard about it? Is it flimsy like some of the cheap ones? My winter white is quite a large stocky boy, so he's not going to be squeezing out of the bars if their sturdy enough. He's also getting on a bit and not so active anymore, same as Sunny, basically they need something that will fit a wheel in and few other things, but not to much. A retirement home for the twilight years. Both the bristol and cambridge seemed to fit the bill, everything else is either too fiddly/awkward (iMac fantasy type) a bit too small, or hamster heaven type which is too big for my requirements and theirs. I will say though I've never actually seen the bristol anywhere, only on stock photos, so I wouldn't know what it really looks like, but the stock image and dimensions seem to suggest its around the same size as the Cambridge, and it looks quite nice, apart from the white bars, though plastikote would sort that.

The Bristol seems to have better access than the Cambridge if that matters? Although i quite like the cambridge. I very nearly bought it when 1st looking at cages. I read many positive reviews on it. Here is a thread from a while ago.

Savic Cambridge ~ Cage Review

Granted the thread is a good few years old and times have moved on with size requirements etc but there are plenty of people who have kept happy hamsters in these cages from pups. As you said your hams are getting older i think it would be fine.

Sorry i cant be much help with the Bristol, but the shelving bits look cheap like they would easily break and i think they would be fiddly to clean. I have seen some nice setups with the shelf bits in the Bristol removed.

Thanks for the link, I think I'm going to get a Cambridge for my Syrian and a bristol for my ww, but make up the layout myself, as the shelving in both, but especially the Cambridge doesn't look like it will last long with those tiny clips. I could be wrong and their sturdier than they look, but in my experience little bits of plastic like that either wear down or snap off. Must say the access does look better on the bristol though, but I'm worried it's not as tall and the Syrian wheel won't fit in.

I think you'll struggle to get a Syrian sized wheel in a Cambridge unless you take one of the shelves out(I have a cambridge and when I had an 8 inch wheel it was ok but the 12 inch really didn't want to fit.The clips were fine on it by the way-never had any problems. The shelves were quite fiddly though.

This is not a good cage at all size wise you'll struggle to get a decent sized wheel in it I had one very briefly for Roland before he got switched to an Alexander because he's a young active hamster. If you have room for 4 cages would it not be better to get 2 that area good size for your 2 hamsters than 4? Or have I picked that up wrong sorry if I have. If you want the Bristol cage have your heart set on it I still have mine that was used for about a week and have been cleaned out well any way if you would like it? Just pm me that's no problem it might suit your older ham if they're slower only you can know what's best for your own fluff but what if you get another younger ham later on?

Sorry I forgot to update this as I've had a busy week. I bought a Bristol cage off eBay, but left the Cambridge, with the intention of seeing what the bristol was like size-wise first, before buying 2 cages. The plan was it was for Kite, my WW. That went out the window though, as I put Sunny in it for a size try out, and he totally made himself at home in it. If he was young, energetic and doing acrobats off the walls I'd say it was too small for a Syrian, but Sunny has shrunk these past weeks, he's now about the size of a pet shop hammy, maybe smaller, and not very lively, so he's happy running a bit on his wheel then plodding around. He loves that green track shelf though, and amazingly, you can fit in that and the 12" trixie wheel perfectly!

I've put Kite in a ferplast rainbow I had, I was going to get him a bristol too, but because of the door design you can't stack them, but if I can get one cheap, I would, as I really like the cage. I don't intend getting another Syrian after Sunny, as I want a dog, but I'd probably get another winter white, chinese or robski, all of which would be suitable for the cage.

I'll try and do a cage review of it though and post some pics.
