Bookshelves
I don't have the link, but I saw a home-made rodent cage online a while ago. It consisted of a solid-backed set of shelves with wire mesh over the front. Holes had been cut and tubes or ramps or ladders inserted to the rodent could travel between levels. Has anyone tried this as a cage? Do you think it's a good idea?

I have seen similiar constructions for rats before, never hamsters. My main concern would be "mucking out".

Wood does take a long time to dry and may absorb your disinfectant too so I would'nt fancy it. Also the hams might knaw through wood and escape!
