Quick toy question

i want to make a hideout for my hamster so I can design my own, I was planning to make it out of air drying clay but I'm not sure weather this is safe or is it possible to make it using a flour and water dough baked in the oven?

P.s my hamster isn't a chewer

I wouldn't use air dry clay. I'd could be toxic if your hamster chews it. Flour and water clay would be okay, though.

If you're set on making a clay house, could you look into ceramics classes in your area? Finished ceramic houses are completely safe for hamsters.


Wood and cardboard are also great options for making your own hamster toys

As niceCrocs mentioned you could make a house from thick cardboard or even wood, theres a thread about the ikea knuff (a wooden magazine holder) that people have made houses/shelves out of, you can also make them out of lollipop sticks or wooden dowels. I've made some of my hamsters houses from creme egg boxes, I have even made lego houses.

Those houses are great. Ive thought about doing something similar .. .. Did your hams not have problems walking on the bumpy surface ??

They never seem to have any issues with them at all, tbh the lego houses were temporary, until i either made them a new house like the ones in my post or when i found a nice alternative hamster house, lots i found were cheap looking plastic ones or ones way to small, or had bottoms etc, one of my Chinese Yin had a cave designed for an aquarium, but eventually swapped that with a nice natural wooden house (one that still has bark on), Yang got the Yin/Yang house in previous post and my Robos lego house went when i made their house in post above.

I'd be a bit cautious about flour & water clay tbh, if it gets damp it can get mouldy which really wouldn't be healthy for your ham.
