Ooh! guess what!
I think Charlie might have made a new nest! Yay! Not 100% sure but I think he has moved. Last night I put the little hay and carrot house in his cage (it is just cardboard, covered with hay and a carrot roof). At first I put it on its side filled with some stuff from a bag I had bought that had bits of moss, bits of hemp and some dried herbs, thinking he might want to nibble or play in it. He certainly went over and had a good nibble, then he realised it was a very useful step for getting up to the shelf. He then went and sat in his little wood house for ages (the one I had hoped he would make a nest in), then came out and had a nibble and a climb on the hay and carrot house again. Before I went to bed I decided to turn the hay house the right way up, leaving the mossy herby stuff inside. He had another look at it but I thought the doorway looked to small for him and thought he would probably just push it over again.
Anyway, this morning I noticed there was something white just inside the entrance of the hay house. Had a peek in Charlie's pod on the shelf and the nest is there but appears to be empty. So I reckon he has made a new nest in the hay house! Yay! Now I can take that shelf out! Well - maybe in a few days. Only thing is, the hay house isn't much of a permanent thing if he eats it!

Re: Ooh! guess what!
It's this one Rosewood Naturals Carrot Cottage Guinea Pig House, Medium: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies
I ordered the small hamster sized one, because the medium guinea pig sized one is massive, and a reviewer said the small one was fine for a large syrian, but the doorway does look too low for me. Anyway, reckon he has got inside it and at least it is open at the bottom so a bit of leeway.

Great looking house. Edible and cozy. It will last a while i recon.
I want a new house for Ginger but dont know if she will appreciate it. She likes her tiny dwarf size house. I hight get one on stilts that I have seen. Change it and put all her bedding and food in it and let her get over it. lol

Re: Ooh! guess what!
I reckon it would be good for a dwarf hamster Ian! It isn't that big at all and the doorway is quite small too. At first I had it tipped on one side with the doorway facing down so then it made a kind nest shape thing, and I filled it full of bits of bedding and tempting things from the small bag of hemp bedding (it had the odd dried leaf and dried flower head) so it seemed smaller inside. I'd say it isn't much bigger than a mug, but with square edges (which you can make rounder inside by stuffing things in it! It's about 15cm (6") wide but only 8.5cm (about 3.5" deep) and 4" high.

Re: Ooh! guess what!
Now I'm getting a bit worried. Either he has disappeared, or gone deaf or worse. Usually when I open the cage door to feed him, his nose is immediately appearing from his house to see what the racket is. But not tonight. I peered in the entrance of both houses and can't actually see him. If he's in the hay house I wouldn't be able to see but it's unusual for him to not come out and investigate. Other half said lift the houses up and see where he is. But think I'll leave it a bit if he is snug and cosy and settling into a new house - or should I just check he is ok?

Aw heck - he's still in the old house - the little pod just saw a nose peep out. At least he's ok though - I was beginning to have bad thoughts that maybe he was allergic to hay or something. He seems to have disappeared under his nest so it looks like an empty nest.

Re: Ooh! guess what!
Well he is definitely being very weird tonight. Yes his nose was sticking out but he was totally motionless. I was beginning to think he was dead. Not a flicker. So I put a tube in the cage on the shelf to see if he would walk into it, if he was able to - and he leapt out and attacked it! Then just went back in his pod. That hemp seems to have done something to his brain! Hope he hasn't been inhaling lol.
