Default Ideal cage for a Chinese hamster - Imac Fantasy?

I have put this here as I thought it might get noticed here more than in the Chinese hamster section...... :P

I don't know if I will be getting a Chinese or not yet; but there was a male Chinese at the Rspca centre when we last visited and I'm just concerned that he may end up there for ages just like the 4 hamsters we recently adopted. (They were there for about a year!)

So for now I am keeping an eye on the Rspca website and am thinking about whether we would really be sensible taking on another hamster.....! I don't see the care side as really being a problem though - I have the time and obviously have food etc and I'm afraid I know full well that any hamster will get tons more attention / toys / quality food here than it ever will at the Rspca Centre. It's more the 'where to put the cage' thing that bothers me lol. I have read conflicting information - some say that they need bars as they love to climb and others say that they can squeeze through bars very easily so should have a Gabber Rex style cage!

My 'ideal' cage would be an Imac Fantasy as I have space for it and could easily fit a cage plus extension into our dining room. I have seen Bunsey's Imac set up for a Chinese but wondered if it really would be ok or if the bars would be too wide?! I may have to just be stern with myself and forget about him for now if so, as I really couldn't fit another Rex / Zoozone cage anywhere at the moment. My 'space' is about 65cm long.

i think the imac is ideal for a chinese. i also had another chinese in one, as well as the one pictured there, for over a year and neither of them ever escaped.

It seems weird looking at that post i made. All those hams are dead now

Aw. Sorry to stir up old memories.

That's the 'problem' with hammies; their lives are far too short. Sadly, we lost Harry, our little character-full WW last night. We found him dead in his cage - he must have died in his sleep as he was curled up in his 'nest' with his eyes closed.

We wondered why he hadn't come out and so we checked on him, fully expecting him to poke his nose out at us having simply decided to stay in bed for a bit longer so it was a bit of a nasty shock. Which means we now have a Savic Cambridge spare as well.

We now have a Savic Cambridge cage spare..... I'm thinking of using this but am unsure as to whether it will be suitable? It has a Wodent Wheel in it and is fully furnished. I've scrubbed it all out today.

I think we will probably be going up to the centre at the weekend anyway to see if he's still there complete with the Cambridge cage (if you take a suitable cage you can adopt the animal straight away - though they probably know us now anyway!). I have a spare Rody Cavia that I can fix up until I get an Imac if he can escape from the Cambridge or doesn't seem happy.

Well for anyone wondering..... we did adopt a Chinese hamster in the end! He's only a baby though; it's a different one to the one we'd originally spotted. He's about 7 weeks old and is very cute. We've named him 'Ping' - will try to get pics at some point.

I errr, got a couple of ebay bargains over the weekend so was able to upgrade my Spiny mouses' set-up leaving me with a Hamster Heaven spare. So Ping is living in a luxurious Hamster Heaven, bless him! He's been fine in it so far; no signs of escaping!

He's a lovely little hamster, very sweet and gentle. But very little at the moment!
