Question Bin cage questions!!

Hello there!! I am getting a new ham soon (Syrian) so I've looked around at bin cages people have made and I have a few questions for those of you who know a lot more about them
-how big is a good size?
-where do you recommend the mesh should go?(top,side,both,ect..)
-what are the best places to buy these bins (note:I live in Canada)
-what types of stores sell the wire mesh?
-how do you cut the holes for the mesh (I've heard the bins crack)
-and finally, do your hamsters like them?

Thank you! x

I just posted on your other thread (curious about which breeder as I'm in Canada too, Ontario though).

I bought the largest IKEA samla bin. Then I went to home depot and bought garden mesh that was 1/4'' for holes, it came in a tube and was like $14.

The holes we are cutting with a drill (to start the hole) then a hand saw. If that does not work, we're using a soldering iron.

We haven't used a bin cage before, but most hamsters love them. If you're close to us, I can help you out as well, since we'll be binning cages this weekend.

Thank you! I live in the Vancouver area so quite far I've heard you should use heat to cut the holes but I don't have anything like that so I'll have to figure something out...

Using a heated knife or tool will make the cuts smoother, but be warned that melting plastic can release toxic fumes so you'll want to do it in a well-ventilated area, and maybe use a chemical mask too You shouldn't have too much trouble if you use a fine-toothed saw blade and don't push into the cut.

I made chunks out of a 110 liter Rubbermaid tote, used a soldering iron with a knife tip, and he loves his cage!
