This is gonna sound silly
So you know how the minimum cage size is 360 sq inches or whatever that is in centimeters, well i was thinking is that for both syrians and dwarfs? Wouldn't they have different cage requirements??? hmmmmmm

You aren't silly at all. Although the dwarfs are so much smaller, they actually need as much, or even more room than Syrians. Those little guys really like a lot of space. I can build up for my Syrians, but it isn't really so great for dwarf hammies. Those furry little feet have to work just too hard in tunnels.

The minimum is for all species, but the recommended size varies. Very few people who actually know the minimum size use it though, they tend to follow at least the recommended size where possible! x

Plus there is no set minimum - different people have different guidelines. The smallest cage most on the forum deem at least sometimes ok is smaller for a dwarf than for a syrian (and with the syrians theres a lot more debate over the smallest possibly suitable size).

The minimum in the hamster world is generally around 360 sq inches though!

Not really. Some on this forum say a mini duna is fine for a dwarf ham, others feel strongly that 70cm by 40cm or even 80cm by 50cm is the smallest that should be ok for any species. Its the same with some keeping syrians in 60cm by 40cm cages and others insisting that 70cm by 40cm or 80cm by 50cm is the bare minimum.
There is no set minimum and even on the forum there's a lot of debate. No-one is right or wrong either, I know people who use smaller cages and I know people who use bigger cages (generally I'm one of them) but there is no set minimum because everyone you ask will give a different answer.
Heck recently I saw a good breeder getting lectured on cage sizes. A good breeder definetly knows how to keep hams but even they were being whinged at because they have a different minimum to the person who was whinging at them.

Re: This is gonna sound silly
I generally follow the guidelines of:
1.) 360 sq inches as the absolute minimum.
2.) As long as it is above 360 sq inches, then go for what you can afford and best suits you, the bigger the better though.
There is no set minimum as the organisation that would impose the minimum would be slaughtered by the billion pound companies such as pets at home, just for pets etc. We can only want the best for our pets and the pet world is extremely diverse where everybody has their own opinion, which they are rightfully entitled to. However the information I believe that we want to feed into people who are new to hamsters is the generally recommended cage sizes! x

Re: This is gonna sound silly
But thats your opinion, the same as others have other opinions - therefore I don't think there is a really set minimum. I think its whats best for the ham and that varies from ham to ham, forget species to species! But again, thats an opinion.
Some people feel there're different minimums for different species, others don't. There's no set rule though so my main point was just that really there's no minimum - its whats best for the individual.

Re: This is gonna sound silly
There is no set minimum, but its best to not look at the minimum size anyway but to look at the bigger cages which are around 80-100cm! x

Re: This is gonna sound silly
Er... Its best to look at whats best for the ham. I was just answering the original question and trying to explain that really there is no minimum - its all down to the individuals and the hamsters and if you look around the forum there're at least 2-3 different commonly stated minimums for each species (and more that aren't stated as often).
In short... Some have different minimums for syrians and dwarf hams, others don't. Everyone has different reasons but no-one is definetly right and no-one is definetly wrong
