How deep should it be? How much shredding/wool should you put in?

We just put in a nice covering over the floor of wood shavings maybe 2cm deep and give a good handful of the Wilkinsons chipped paper J cloth type bedding to make a nest. They arrange it to suit themselves really. Dwarfs tend to like a deeper layer to dig in. Just be careful it does to jam the wheel if it is too deep.

We cover the bottom, around an inch deep, and then give him a pile of toilet paper (just whatever looks right, he shreds it all anyway) for his bed. He does like it deep, to re-arrange himself, but if I put a deep layer in the Gabber it would cost me a fortune!

as deep as you can afford, i'd say! They love to dig. You shouldn't use any kind of "wool" bedding

I tend to use a good few cm's, in winter I often add more. though I have robos mainly. you have to be cearful of the water bottle in the cage making sure it doesn't touch it thus making it leek, also you must make sure it isn't making there head tilt too much to drink from the bottle.

though some hamsters (like my chinese) will use the extra to cover the water bottle and then leaving a puddle of water in the cage, so he has to have less, but still about 1cm deep.

With my robos I like to provide 3 types of floor covering (spoilt or what? ) I divide the bottom of the tank in 3 by woodshavings, wood pellets & then a 'grassy mat' - which is flat so the wheel stays up & doesn't get bits of wood stuff in it.

Then I provide the 'safe bed' shredded cloth stuff for them in their house(s) but they generally just dig a 'butt grove' in the wood stuff & curl up like little buddhas
