I have considered making a bin with the bin you are going to use. Have you considered using a soldering iron they are fairly cheap and make life much easier? This thread is going in my favourites x

I used a wood burning kit to make holes and thin the plastic around the cut outs before cutting the holes. It worked very well.

I kept going between this bin which is 80cm in length or another which is 100cm. The 100cm is £25 and the 80cm is £10. So if my hamster does need more space i will just buy another 80cm and connect the two, still works out cheaper! I did consider soldering iron but seeing as im very clumsy i was scared to get it! Although i did just find online that if you have a gas cooker you can put a screwdriver or fork over the hob and it works as well. Unfortunately i dont have a gas cooker so would have to find a way to make safe fire! Thank you, i will try to keep you updated on my progress! The bits were only ordered tonight so should be a little while still. Sorry for such a long reply

I don't know whether this video will help you at all.

I actually have built the design that you are planning. I made two bin cages from the Wilko 62 litre storage bin and stacked them on top of one another. They have ventilation holes on the sizes and have tubes connecting them on the outside. I currently am not using the cage but I do have it as a spare.

Just as a guide you can fit a 6.5" wheel inside the cage but not anything bigger however a 12" flying saucer does fit nicely
