Default Has anyone got a hamster run?

Or made one? Im a bit edgy with Alving running on the sofa as Im worried he'll jump off so thought it would be nice to have a run which we can set up in the front room, and watch him run around and investigate x

I have two. One is mainly for the dwarfs as it is smaller, and has a crittertrail connector which means I connect it to Frisbee's cage. I did get it in America though. It's a crittertrail. It's rubbishly made though.

My other one for Sammy is a SAM one from Pets@Home. It was reasonably cheap. Good spacing and is well made.

I would warn you about them. They are often too small for Syrians so I would advise two joined up or something simialar. I normally join two SAM one's up on my bed over a sheet and Sammy has the whole double bed with his cage on the side which he climbs in and out of. He LOVES it! It is annoying though. As my TV is in my bedroom and I often end up sitting either in the playpen or perched pecariously on the edge. What you give up for hamsters, eh?

Also, many Syrians climb out of them straight away. I'm lucky with Sammy who doesn't but some just climb out and don't even bother too look around. If you want to get one than maybe try it and if it doesn't work take it back?
You have to supervise them in the playpen the same as the couch though. So maybe its not worth it?

I'd suggest making ont out of hardboard or similar. As the sides are smooth they won't be able to climb up them, and you can make it any size you want. You can do it the simple way, by making 4 sides that slot together, or if you're a more advanced DIY-er, you could so one with more sides and hinges. It would only need to be about 12" high.

almost all the robos have learnt to climb out of it so they are in a playbox when out. my WW can jump out though .
I think they are good but you have to keep an eye on them.

Do you mean something like this?

It's high enough so that even Syrians can't climb/jump out (40cm) but they gnaw at the wood, especially in the corners, trying to escape - so they can't stay in over night. But it's safe as long as I look after them from time to time (Henry doesn't gnaw that much anyway, so I can even leave the room for a few minutes while he's playing in there). Depends on the hamster ... it's at least much less dangerous than having them run on the sofa.

I did ...
But it's not that difficult, you could even make it from cardboard instead of wood, then you just have to cut out the pieces and glue them together.
