Unhappy wanting to upgrade but not sure what to?

Hi again all..
I'm wanting to upgrade my hamster's cage to give her more room. I had been pining for the alaska, which is well within my budget and space range in my house, so I could easily get that and it will still be bigger than her cage currently. However today I stumbled accross the barney cage and OMG! I've fallen in love with it! The only problem is, I have to hide my hamster from my landlord whenever they come to visit, and unfortunately the barney cage is about 6cm too long to fit where i currently hide her, and there's nowhere else she can be hidden I now feel that the alaska cage, though it meets the minimum, would be too small and I'd way prefer to have the barney simply for the space but if i cant hide her, i cant upgrade her to the barney. Is there a cage that is in between sizes of the alaska and the barney? I want something bigger than the alaska preferably, but about 6cm shorter in width than the alaska
If there isnt anything available then of course I'll just use the alaska.

The Barney really is a better size. Especially if you have a Syrian. Why did you get a pet if your landlord isn't okay with it? You should really respect the fact you're living in someone elses property and respect their rules.

Hi,
My landlord isnt explicitly 'not okay' with it, they just dont know about it. Also I live in a student house in the UK, not sure if youve seen one of those but they're horrendously kept and stupidly overpriced. My hamster doesn't cause any mess and the landlord/agents are happy to charge me £500 a month for a room in a house thats falling apart. Their feelings arent my priority lol.
I know the barney cage is better of course and in an ideal world I would get it, yes she's a syrian. what i asked for was advice as to whether there's anything in between the size of an alaska and a barney.
The letting agents come round maybe once every 3 months, I just had a thought that maybe i could just get the barney and whenever they come round transfer her into a small travel cage and dismantle the barney (without distrbing the nest obvs, just taking the bars off), and slide it under my bed or something.
if you have any helpful suggestions please let me know

Your idea of getting the Barney and then transferring her to a smaller cage to hide during their visits sounds good. Just be careful not to get caught and get yourself evicted.

i think i might try that because like you said the barney is waaaay more suitable, alaska only has about 480sq inches of floor space based on the internal measurements i think which is obviously too small.
Yeah I'm thinking that may be the best option, I'm sure the barney wire part folds up? in which case i think it might work.. if only the cage was 100cm x 48 cm x 50 cm it wouldnt be an issue, so annoying but obviously want whats best for the ham and it seems like theres no in between cages unfortunately.
Lol hopefully not!

Well the plaza is 50cm wide apparently not sure if that would still be too wide or slightly less of a problem? Most other cages that size (criceti 100, Alexander, maxi duna, falco..) are 50cm or just over. You wouldn’t be able to fit longer than 100cm in length would you? Otherwise 120cm fish tanks you can get 45cm ish wide. I agree though that an Alaska isn’t going to be the best upgrade.

Although it might be worth asking about the possibility of keeping a hamster, my current place (and previous) were no pets allowed apparently but they seemed to think a hamster kept in a cage (at all times mind you) would be fine.

Not sure if the Barney comes apart tbh,I know the Alexander doesn’t. If that’s the case, the. The Alaska might be best in your situation since the bars collapse for storage. The internal measurements arent as small once you filled it up with plenty of substrate too.

When I was a student I had 4 hamsters and a cat, usually as long as you keep the house clean and no one makes a complaint they dont have an issue

I've had hamsters in two rental places without permission and nothing was ever said. I know ethically it's not perfect but it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes! I've had mould, broken showers, unreliable lighting, broken fridges and more to bring up if there was ever any complaining lol

If you could get an IKEA samla as a temp bin cage while the Barney is flattened (fingers crossed this is a thing because that sounds like a great option) you can use it as actual storage in between times. But tbh I'd be tempted to just leave her out or throw a blanket over the cage or something. The likelihood of them caring enough to cause a problem is small.

Another possible, again morally ambiguous, option is to say you're temporarily babysitting the ham for a friend, if they say anything. Gives you another three months to find a hideaway solution then.

You've got to love this site ... you ask for advice on a cage and get additional advice on how to handle the landlord. Go with your gut on the Barney and use Shannonmcn's advice on how to deal the agent. Good Luck with your plans!

Thank you all for your suggestions!!
I think what I'm going to do is buy the barney, and then when the agents come round i can dismantle it. The wire part will come off the top of the base, the base can go under my bed and the wire part is small enough in width when turned on its side to fit in her previous hiding spot :P
God I'd be scared of just throwing a blanket over it - I feel like student landlords and letting agents aren't as reasonable as your average landlord.. they took £400 out of our deposit for one of our houses for forgetting to clean the oven shelves! haha. I have considered just asking them if I can have a hamster, but I'm scared that if they say no, they'll get super suspicious every time they come round, lol. To be fair, at the moment my mum is moving house so my plan if they find her is to just say it's mine from home and I'm taking care of her through the move.
Anyway! Thanks for your help everyone, I think the plan is to go ahead and buy the barney, I already have a small bin which she plays in so can use that as a temp cage when the letting agents come round. I'll figure it out somehow. Now i just need to get rid of the fishtank that she was in before!!
