Bin cages are cages, they could be made just as a play ground area but people make these bins into homes for their rodents to live. They are usually just made from storage bins, preferably clear ones. There are two articles about making your own bin cage on Hamster Central, please check out the fallowing link for more details.

All my rodents expect for one Roborovski hamster are all in their own bins. They are better for many reasons, they are light weight unlike tanks, they have the best of both worlds as far as barred and plastic cages go, they keep bedding inside and drafts outside and the provide more room usually, floor space is better then levels, and they are light weight and stackable and the fun of them is they are customizable and prevents bar chewing.

my bins are all about 27" long by 15" deep and 14" tall Yours bin sounds a bit on the smallish side to me, unless its for a drwaf hamster maybe.

I think longer is better so long as its not to narrow, I always say that you should provide the hamster with as much room as you have available. But I guess thats up to you, just my feelings, just a though

Bigger is better
With a pair of hamsters space is important - horizontal rather than vertical. You ideally want to have two of everything in there - two wheels, water bottles, food dishes, potties, beds, toilet roll tubes....

Bin cages
You buy them in large houseware stores, supermarkets like WallMart/ASDA, Tesco, and places such as Matallan and IKEA - they are storage tubs/containers a bit like the ones you get for under your bed but taller.
