Firstly, are these Chinese housed together? Are they male or female? While pet shops still sell them in pairs, it's generally best to treat female Chinese as solitary. I have heard of male pairs succeeding, but again most people will advise you keep them solitary too.
Secondly, I am assuming you are in the US? I wouldn't advise going smaller than a 20 gallon long tank (30x12 inches, about 75x30 cm) for a
single dwarf or Chinese, and personally would rather use something with a bit more floorspace, like a 3ft tank (36x12 inches, about 90x30 cm). If you can get ahold of one in the Pecto or Petsmart (I can't remember which it is!) $-per-gallon sale, a 30 or 40 gallon breeder (36x18 inches, either 12 or 16 inches tall) makes an awesome hamster habitat for any species
