Default Taller cage? **update**

I used to have a hamster in a cage which was tall enough for two shelves. but I was wooried about if he fell when climbing (which he never did), so went back to his smaller cage = about 12" high. However, I'm now wondering if the tall one is really OK. It will gove more room to play. Peanut is about 16 months and loves the tube. Alternatively I could put him in a Gabber-type I have, but he can't climb in there. Before I had the new rat cage next to him his cage didn't look so small.

What do you think?

If he seems happy in his current cage I would be inclined to keep him in there ann. As they get older they do not adapt to change so well and when we had them in shelved cages we found that eventually the oldies did not climb up off the bottom level. You could try it as a playpen and see how it goes then move if you think he likes it. Any move can be a bit stressful for a hamster so we try to keep it to a minimum.

I was thinking about getting a taller cage as i have seen great ones in the crittertrail range but was also woried that if they fell while chewing the bars which they often do would fall and hurt themselves but.....i suppose i worry too much

Crittertrail cages are evil!! They're far too small, and over priced tat IMO. They break soooo easily..

Well, the surprise acquisition of Snowy has settled it! As she had spent all her life in a small tank and had never climbed, I couldn't put her in a tall cage. Peanut is in the 18" tall cage and loving it. He's on all the shelves. In his old cage the tube to the one shelf was his favourite place. To be on the safe side, I've put a thick layer of shredded paper in the bottom.

Snowy now has a shelf to play on and has worked out how to get up there. Two happy hamsters!
