Default do open nests make hamsters more sensitive to noise?

Harry is settling in really well and loves his new cage. but he makes an open nest to sleep in and seems to wake up at every little noise. which is quite a lot as he is in our very hectic living room. i keep giving him empty boxes with his bedding in but he just shreds them. fluffy our other hamster has a plastic house that she sleeps in and she sleeps through everything, even the hoover. should i buy him a house or is he just a light sleeper?

It would be a nice option for him to have a house, but occasionally they just want to sleep out in the open. I'd say buy it for him so he can choose to hide if he wants to.

I currently have a holiday hamster at my house and he came to me very jumpy and open nesting. I have given him an upturned ice cream tub with a door cut out and filled down and now he sleeps through noise x

One of my hamsters, Ruby, always sleeps in an open nest even if I provide a house for her. I think it is just the way she wants it to be though. I have a big cardboard box with a hole in it or her to sleep in but she just steals the bedding and puts it in her nest.
She wakes up for noises too, but I know she is a very active hamster anyway and wakes up in the day sometimes. Just her preference, humans have them too

I use empty cardboard boxes of Fur-nando to build a nest in, should he wish (I use empty Felix boxes, the irony of him sleeping in a cat food box isn't lost on me ). My last hamster, Chewbacca, used to have an open nest sometimes, depending on how he felt. I noticed he would quite often poke his head out in the day wondering what was going on, so I like to provide both options so they can decide. I clank around in here all day, so am glad Fur-nando likes his boxes! The bonus is, with a nice big box like this (or indeed, an ice-cream tub), they become a platform too, so they have even more places to hang out on top

Cookie favours an open nest, she sleeps in a corner underneath her wheel. I don't find her to be more sensitive to nosie, for example the hoover won't wake her. She does make a large nest though out of Megazorb and Safebed so she is pretty covered up. She does have a large Igloo but won't use it.

She'll only wake if I'm changing food/water but I suspect she's coming out to see if she'll get a treat

Luna has an open nest, she doesnt get woken up by noise very often but if she does she then covers herself in substrate, sort of like us pulling the duvet over our heads. She has the option of two houses and has had two different additional houses in there, neither of which she used.

I think as long as theres an option to have a house they will choose where they are happiest

How long have you had him? If you've not had him long it may be a case of him getting used the the noises in your home

we've only had him about 2 weeks. I gave him an ice cream tub last night an he built his nest in it an he's still there now and sleeping peacefully, but that could be because the kids arent here lol.
