Two questions about toilet rolls and fluffy bedding
Hi, firstly, I came across an old thread on here that said that the fluffy bedding (e.g Snooze which I use) is not good for hamsters? Several of my friends use this, but is it dangerous? If so, why?
Secondly, do hamsters actually like toilet roll cardboard tubes? My friend's gerbils go nuts for them and spend ages shredding them, but I put one in Richard's cage and he doesn't seem bothered.
Thanks!

Re: Two questions about toilet rolls and fluffy bedding
Fluffy bedding is dangerous because a hamster can get entangled in it and cause injury to itself or suffocate. There have been reports of broken and injured limbs and such. Ingesting it is unhealthy as well.
Hamsters do like the toilet rolls a lot if they can fit into them easily. For example, my robos love them. My chubby winter white fits but barely, and so she's not as interested.

Re: Two questions about toilet rolls and fluffy bedding
Toilet roll tubes are fine for Robos and Chinese hamsters, but too narrow for chubby dwarfs of a syrian! They are better having a `Chube` cardboard tube as these are wider. I actually have a tube from the inside of a carpet roll that my nephew got me. He`s a carpet fitter to trade and got me some tubular cardboard roll offcuts! I then just measured the length I wanted and used a saw to cut them into 7" inch lengths and they are also wide enough for a large syrian to sit inside. So check out your local carpet shop bins!

Re: Two questions about toilet rolls and fluffy bedding
Hamtastic basically covered everything on why fluffy bedding is bad but just to add when it is ingested it can become entangled and stuck inside your hamsters intestines causing it severe pain and sometimes death if it does not become unstuck naturally or by operation.
As for the tubes I think it depends on the hamster. My robos adore them for running through, my young WW loves to chew them and my older WW ignores them most of the time unless she is really bored. They are all completely different

Re: Two questions about toilet rolls and fluffy bedding
My syrian is nuts about cardboard so tubes are great for him. Honestly I bought him an edible log from P@H and he didn't even care he just stayed with the toilet roll.
The fluffy bedding issue has been covered. XD

Thanks for your replies everyone! I'll not be using the fluffy bedding anymore, he can just have extra sawdust.
He's probably not interested in the tube since he's waaay too big to fit in it I love syrians!

Shredded loo roll is great for bedding. I use Tesco Value one.
