Default Home made hamster cage

Decided to have a go at doing this as the larger cages are too expensive i.e. £30 + for something of this size. So far the materials have cost me £12, £6 for the underbed storage bin, approximately 75cm long and 35cm width and a depth of 17cm ,and £6 for the 13mm x 13mm wire mesh panel, 90cm x 60cm. This should provide a large spacious home for any small mammal from Syrian downwards and should be suitable for gerbils, dwarfs, steppe lemmings etc.

I will keep you posted and provide some pics provided it gets finished....

Wish me luck and IF its any good and somebody may like to own one they could be made to order, cost about £20 + p+p. This would be for the basic cage which you would have to furnish yourself.

Wow that looks great pouchy. Will it have two levels as it looks spacious enough for that?

Yes most likely it will have 2 levels when I get around to constructing them once I've decided what material to use. Now all that needs to be done is to stop the top sliding around on the top of the bin, add the level or levels and the wheel etc and it will be finished.
Took a lot longer than expected to get this far as some ideas had to be changed along the way as they were unworkable. It has still cost much less than a company cage.
Had a look at the Gabber Rex in a pet shop, was impressed but thought the plastic was a little too fragile and easily broken. On the plus side nice and large with plenty of space. Wouldn't like to drop it by accident, though.
Thanks for your kind comments, Souffle.

It looks great - really spacious and interesting for it's hamster resident. I also like the ventillation. Is it for a Syrian or a Dwarf?

Well we haven't had any problems with any of ours - we've got two Rex's and a Lux currently in service, with another Rex waiting for it's new occupant to arrive. My son is quite heavy-handed with the lid at times (and I'm ultra clumsy!) but ours are still in full working order. I guess it would be possible to break them though, if you were unlucky.

Actually it might be fine for a couple of gerbils as a deep layer of litter would obviate the need for levels as gerbils are frantic diggers. Plus water bottles could be attached to the mesh from the outside as the gerbs would be able to reach thenme easily.
Could be for a syrian more than a dwarf if the gerbs aren't available.

Haven't made my mind up yet.
