Rocks in the cage? Dirt?
I want to go on a natural look in Arrow's cage since most of her toys are wooden. Are boiled rocks okay to put in the cage? If you made sure there are no sharp edges as well of course. I have a big stone that I brot home from Cyprus on my desk and Arrow loves sitting on it. I also have a few other white rocks from Crete, would they be okay if I boiled them?
Some german cages I've seen has had dirt in them (soil, earth, what you want to call it ) Has anyone on the forum tried this with their hams?

Yeah, should be fine if it's boiled.
I've given my two dwarfs a corner of soil, they love to dig in it! You need to put it in the oven/microwave first though

Roughly how long did you put the soil in the microwave/oven, Mark?
It'll probably turn Cooper and Oscar brown as they have white fur.

One minute, is there a difference between soil and compost?

I used soil from the bags you can buy at garden centers, I put it in the oven for roughly 10/15 mins

Re: Rocks in the cage? Dirt?
Re the compost - careful that what you give doesnt have plant food in (a lot do) as I cant imagine this would be good for the hamster to ingest. It may not do any harm but I wouldnt risk it.
I dont see the need to bake the compost either - compost is made so that it doesnt carry parisites or anything as these can damage plants, certainly seedlings. So unless you've had the bag for a long time or its been stored somewhere damp I wouldnt bother baking it. I have a bag of compost in my spare bedroom (I live in a flat but grow herbs) so it doesnt get damp or go near any animals, insects etc. Unless its baked on a very high temp it wont get rid of any nasties anyway.

Re: Rocks in the cage? Dirt?
I think mine may need to be cooked as it came from B&Q where they keep it outside and I think some rain might have got in as it's a bit damp. I'm pretty sure they don't have plant food in but I was going to check anyway.
