Default Soft Sorbent Natural Lavender Scented Bedding

This drives me a bit nuts.. but there is this new product available in Petsmart, and I'm sure all kinds of other pet stores too. Its called Kaytee Soft Sorbent Natural Lavender Scented Bedding.

Quote:
Kaytee Soft Sorbent Natural Lavender Scented Bedding.

Product Description: (limited quantities available)
This bedding is blended with the perfect amount of real, aromatic lavender flowers to bring a pleasant air to your small pet's home.

A PetSmart exclusive that adds a gentle, soothing scent to your small pet's habitat! Wood fibers are converted into this soft, highly absorbent bedding and litter. This bedding is blended with the perfect amount of real, aromatic flowers to bring a pleasant air to your small pet's home. Choose from lavender, rose, or mint. The result is an earth-friendly, absorbent bedding that effectively controls odor and adds a cheerful aroma.

Key features:

* Helps control odor
* Safe, natural scent
* Product is colorfast
* Great nesting material
* Made from reclaimed resources
* Flushable, compostable
* No pine or cedar aromatic oils

Okay no pine or cedar, thats great and all but does anyone find this product ridiculous? A hamster could care less if it smelled like lavender or roses! Obviously this is just another monkey making ploy targeted to the desire of people who want everything they own to smell scented.

What I dont like about this product is that it implies that hamsters smell, therefore hammy owners better by this product! Hamsters dont smell so long as you clean their cage. Products like this get to me.. like that small animal shampoo you can buy. Hamster don't need to smell minty fresh!

I wish they would focus on making better hamster cages for syrians. Maybe its time I came up with a new cage plan for syrians and pitch it the ideas to one of these companies.

Actually like many other "safe hamster" products that come out I worry about after affects.. I wonder if the scent would be to strong and irritating to the hamster? I wonder how safe it really is?

I've seen scented bedding like this in Pets @ home, like you say, whats the point!? Also breathing in the odour all the time, I wouldn't think that was very good for the animal!

I have to agree with all that...even as a newbie to the hammy world I can see that this is absolutely ridiculous...hammies just need to have their environment kept clean, they don't have to smell like they're going for a night on the town

And yes I think that there is a gap in the market when it comes to cages...they ought to concentrate less on those fancy ones and more on the basics...even if the tubes were bigger to accommodate Syrians better they're not "user-friendly"...just another money-making gimick if you ask me.

I think these must be awful for animals. With hamsters having a much more sensitive sense of smell than us can you imagine how it must feel to constantly have to sniff this. They may not even like these scents. Just because humans do does not mean animals do. Crazy.

Thats exactly what I was thinking as well. Its would be really strong for a hamster cooped up in a plastic cage with little ventilation.

My friend used the roses and lavender one for ages. I really don't get the point. I didn't smell that much different and it just made the sawdust look pink - that was pretty cool though. It cost more too. I do agree its pointless and just another way to get us all to part with our money, but at the end of the day thats what these shops are really about. They couldn't care less about our pets well fair really.

(Now my friend gets her guinea pigs lavender shampoo - poor creaturesn )

Lavander releases phenols which can aggravate respiratory problems in small rodents and yes, this IS a ploy to bag more money out of people. They see this product and think `Oh, would`nt that be nice in little hammies cage`, not using their brains for one moment to think what it might do to `little hammies` airways?!!

It`s just rediculous and aimed at people who don`t research hamster health and don`t know any better.

I think Rach is talking about me Yes Daisy had rose scented woodshavings and lavender scented ones, yes I fell into the marketing trap.
My guinea pigs don't have lavender shampoo though They have gorgeous guineas natural lemon and tea tree shampoo conditioner.

I don't know much about guinea pigs, but do they really need to be bathed?
