Hammydude, looks like you did a wonderful job on your bin cage!! What's the lid like? The images are a little small but you can still get a good idea of what you have done in there.
I'm glad you managed to find a clear large bin. I like the clear ones because it allows natural light in, plus you can see the critters inside.
Whats "the petting area"? is that some kind of tube like attachment from the other cage or something?
Yes I did get another gerbil, I'll post about it soon in the Miscellaneous Section...

Candace, what size is your robo aquarium? 20 gallon by the look of it? I was wondering - what method do you use to clean out the tank. Right now I have a 10 gallon and as Nibbles is nearing full size I'm going to be getting him a larger tank. Unfortunately bins are out of the question for me. Hamsters are not on the good side with my hubby and a large bin anywhere in our house is just not going to be appealing to him at all! I can not make him any angrier as he is giving me a hard time as it is! I have to admit also that I do prefer the clear glass tanks though, and noise reduction is another very important thing!
I will be getting a 20 gallon next. (I can get the screen cover to fit it also). I don't have any problem cleaning out my 10 gallon right now under the sink with the little shower attatchment. However a 20 gallon is heavier and will be much harder, if even possible, to carry and wash at the sink! Do you, after removing all the bedding and stuff just wipe yours down? Or do you carry it to a bath tub or something? (Which would be possible) I was just wondering
Another thing I am thinking of, IF I can figure something out, would be to place some sort of tray on the bottom of the tank. That way I could just remove and thoroughly clean the tray, and give the whole of the tank a wipe down. (I use distilled white vinegar to clean mine, works great). This would make cleaning a lot easier each week. Then I wouldn't have to move it other than whenever I wanted to do a whole tank wash down... Just ideas...

Coco,
My two roborovskis are actually in a 29-gallon tank. Since they are small they dont really make any "wet corners" or spots. The critter care "carefesh equivalent" bedding absorbs pretty much everything and I only clean out their tank every other week simply because they are much smaller.
The 29-gallon is actually pretty heavy for me even with just bedding in it. What I do is get it on the floor and scoop all the bedding out with my hands and then I take a vacuum hose to vacuum out any seed husks or droppings. At the most id give the bottom a wipe.
For a Syrians I would think cleaning it somehow with water would be necessary unless you have your ham using a potty. I think your idea about getting a sort of tray to line the bottom is a good idea...
Your hubby sounds like a lamer lol.. I mean its a hamster, not some barking dog that pees on your floor and eats your furniture...

Cleaning out aquariums
Hi Coco1 one suggestion I can think of is to remove as much of the litter as you can using a small brush and shovel, hoover any remaining residue out, and then clean and rinse it well. A nice deep litter layer, using something like Carefresh (on it's own or mixed with Aspen etc) and a potty, changed daily should help keep the need to do a complete clean out down to fortnightly hopefully. I have a "hamster" vacuum which was only about £25, which lives permanently in the hamstery. It uses reusable washable bags or throw away paper bags, depending on what you are going to be picking up!
You will need to make sure to clean the corners well, especially if the potty gets missed and ensure you rinse well but apart from that you should hopefully be fine doing a complete wash out - in the bath is probably best - about once a month.

Sounds good Babyboos. I do clean the corners well, although he has a potty in one corner he also likes to use the other corner! (May have to get a second potty, although when I get the larger cage I will probably put a sand bath into that other corner anyway). He still potties in his house to a degree, I guess I can't completely rid him of that, even though he took to his potty immediately. His food bowl is in the other corner so that stays clean. This is one thing I do like about the aquariums - the glass is very easy to clean and any wet there wipes right up. I use a deep carefresh litter and that does most of the job for me.
Thank you

The cages remind me of like pre-school or something because they are so colorful lol. You got quite a few hamsters there! I also noticed a couple Silent Spinners... I find they are too small for my Syrian Gerald, he's a big boy though so I bought him a large comfort wheel.
