I think there's no harm in entering him at 8 weeks old, provided he's settled in well and is tame. There is the young stock class for a reason .

Honesty, breeder hams tend to do better in the main class than the pet class as the only pet hams that are entered in the pet class are ridiculously tame whereas Quigley might not (I'm not too sure). Jasper has done much better in his main shows than the pet show at Bracknell. You can always wait for Bracknell and Peterborough as well. I went to both last year and both were good fun.

Also, I just want to add, Quigley is a stunning hamster .

AP, I clicked on the link posted by Fluffagrams on the Andover show thread to look at the photos. I noticed that Syrian Best in Show and Reserve BIS were both won by Quigley's breeder. And they win regularly. So Quigley is bound to be potential show quality. Your only problem is arranging to have a show pen for any main show entry. Chesca could probably advise you on that.

Coco asking Palmer-Stephenson is a good idea, thanks. Yes, they have done well this year. I know they've got BIS at three shows this year and reserve BIS in two. They don't have any champions or grand champions, but they do place regularly.

Chesca thanks for the tip on the pet comp. Quigley is tame, but he is still a baby and thus very active. I'd imagine there would be other hamsters in the pet section who would be far more likely to sit still! So, I don't think he'd place in the pet section, unfortunately.

On reflection, Bath is probably both too big and too far away for Quigley's first show. I'd probably be better off waiting. I think once he's older I will have a bette idea of whether he would do well at a show.

Palmer-Stephenson do breed really good hams
Just thought I'd add my thoughts as a couple of things worth knowing I don't think have been mentioned.
Firstly, even though they chose to sell him, be it privately or on the sales table, doesn't always mean that the show potential is lacking. As has been said, show quality isn't the only thing we look for as breeders. For example, if a breeder does well and wins but get's comments about needing a better head shape or better size, then they will probably keep the babies that have the better size or head shape and sell other babies that have equally good show potential.
Secondly, breeders do sometimes make mistakes with the hams they keep and the hams they sell. I'm friends with a breeder who doesn't really breed much anymore and I had 2 WW's from them. Both did fantastically at shows when in the prime and the ones the breeder kept didn't. Even when you're experienced and know what you're doing, it can be difficult to gauge how well a ham will grow into their colour and a ham can appear a good size but slow down in terms of growth so end up being smaller than originally thought.

Definitely try your boy in main class, he's a gorgeous hammy and I see no reason why he wouldn't do well (although I'm not a Syrian breeder, Chinesey's are my thing lol). Something I wanted to say with showing though, if he doesn't do well the first time, don't give up, keep trying a few more times. I've had hamsters fail to place at their first few shows and then go on to win their class a couple of months later. One of my boys, Arlo, won his class a couple of times and then didn't score well for a while so I gave him a break from showing to breed him. One of my other hams who I usually show was in with a girl so I took Arlo to our last show in his place and he won his first Certificate of Merit at over 18 months old!

But yeah, definitely try and keep trying a few times, you never know, he might bring you home a few rosettes and trophies in the future

Thanks so much for sharing your advice and experience GhostsInSnow. Your response was really helpful! I think showing could be really fun, so I would like to give it a try. Of course, I also think Quigley is gorgeous - but I am biased! I really have no idea whether his colour/markings and type are good. Then again, those things may all change dramatically when he gets older.

Ooh, when I saw the title of this thread I got excited

I'm no professional but I think that Quigley would make a wonderful show ham. I would love to hear about it if he ever entered any

He is still very young so it is tricky to tell. Breeders can't keep every decent individual and often send pups to homes where they are pets.
From a judges view and just from the pics ( you can tell much more from the feel of the hamster etc - I can see he is moulting out his baby coat (normal at this age) He has a moult line and the front half is his adult colour.
Long haired Goldens tend to look dull I have found due to the undercolour showing through and the ticking is not obvious on long haired goldens.
His head looks OK with nice dark ears but he currently lacks ticking and the swarthy eye rings even on the head. He has a nice even skirt and it looks to go all round which is always a bonus on a long haired male.
You always take the best hamster home though regardless if you win anything or not.
I would always advise a newcomer to try the pets class first and see what happens at a show and enjoy entering pets. They you can decide if you want to try showing and how he settles on an actual outing like this.
You would enter him in LH AOC male I think plus you could duplicate in Young stock, Novice and grand challenge plus any others you are eligible for.

Thank you Souffle! I see what you mean about his face. It's funny, because as you can see in this picture of him taken two weeks ago by his breeder, he did used to have more ticking on his face and more clear eye rings.

Here he is this morning, for comparison:

Why would the markings on his face have changed like that?

Interesting what you say about him moulting out his baby coat. Out of curiosity, where is his moult line? I can't see it! And, when will he finish moulting out his baby coat?

A lot of hams grow into their colour so when you look at Quigley, you'll notice his colour seems richer at the front half. Colour pales out a bit towards the back end in long haired hamsters but his richer colour stops about midway down his back and his baby colour goes from there

Interesting! I wonder where all the baby fur is going? I haven’t seen any lying around his cage and when my cats moult for summer there is usually fur all arounfmd the house lol. How long does it usually take for their adult coat to fully come in?
