Default A few class questions

I'm very sorry if these are silly questions, but I plan on entering Larry-Jasper in a few new classes now that I am a SHC member.

Do I need a prefix to enter the Novice (D13) class? Or is it just if you are a member? What is the Members Points Class (D18 )? What about Grand Challenge (D19)?.

Also, just wondering why at some shows there is a pen hire cap? 5 per year for 1st year of membership and 3 for a 2nd year. Where can I buy a show pen? I was under the impression that only one person made them but stopped.

Thanks

There's no such thing as a silly question, particularly where shows are concerned because the chances are, someone else will have wondered the same thing (I know I did)!

Basically entry to the Novice class is determined by the date you joined the club and is only open to those that are in their first year of membership. As members aren't eligible to register Prefixes until they have been a member for a year, no one in this class is allowed to enter under a prefix name.

Members Points Class tends to be entered by regular exhibitors as the points that you score for each placing get added up and count to an annual award.

Grand Challenge is one that I recommend entering as you'll need to enter it to be eligible for Larry-Jasper to win a Certificate of Merit and three Certificates of Merit will mean that he becomes officially recognised as a champion.

Some clubs put a restriction on hire pens to give priority to the newer exhibitors. Dwarf pens occasionally come up for sale second hand so it's worth keeping your eyes out for them on the SHC Facebook Page where people will often post that they have some. At the moment, I don't think there are a great deal of new ones being made as it's only one guy doing them in his free time.

Thank you so much Fluffagrams. I joined last year at the Peterborough show in October so I guess I can still enter . Can I still enter Members Points even if I only show a few times a year? I will definitely enter him in the Grand Challenge then.

Thanks for the show pen explanation. I will definitely keep my eyes out for spare pens.

You'll still be able to enter Novice until October. After October you'll be able register a prefix (if you want one) and you'll then be able to enter the Intermediate class instead.

Any member is welcome to enter the Members Points Class if they wish but obviously the larger hamsteries who go to lots of shows will stand a better chance of winning the annual award. Last year's was won by Tristar for the Syrians and Vectis for the Dwarfs.

In Members Points/MPC (or Free Membership Class/FMC in Midland shows) points are awarded to the people placing 1st-4th in the MPC/FMC class.
1st = 4 points
2nd = 3 points
3rd = 2 points
4th = 1 point

The points for each exhibitor are accmlulated throughout that year's shows for that club. In Southern, the exhibitors with the top 3 scores for Syrian MPC, Syrian (junior exhibitor), dwarf and dwarf (junior exhibitor) get a rosette presented at the first SHC show of the following year. If you don't get to many shows for that club then you may not get many points, but if you don't mind the extra 5p per hamster then you never know

You don't have to have a prefix to enter intermediate - it's for anyone in their second year of membership (in SHC and MHC, rules are different at Northern shows which uses year of showing not membership, if I recall correctly). You can't show under a prefix in pet class at SHC and MHC shows, even a non-hamster. If I enter a duprasi in pets, I enter them in my name not my prefix.

I agree with Fluffagrams about always entering Grand Challenge just in case!

The hire pen cap hasn't had to be used often. Usually there are more hire pens available if needed, but as committee members have to bring the pens to the shows sometimes all the people who care for the pens aren't attending every show, so there may be fewer, e.g. at Bradford when my poor little car can't take 2 sets of hamsters/ overnight tanks/ overnight stuff and 40 hire pens! People who have been showing a long time may hire pens too, though usually they have their own. Sometimes you may have more nice hammies to show than pens of your own. When I've been show sec I haven't had to refuse anyone a pen they've requested but we have had to do some emailling round to source extra pens. So if you were to want more than the number stated on the schedule, email the show sec to ask if it's possible.

There has recently been a lot of old Syrian pens bought for refurbishment and resale by club members. There weren't any dwarfy ones in those batches though.

I've just looked back at what I'd written about the Intermediate class and prefixes and realised that it didn't quite make sense so thank you for clearing that up for me.

That's worth knowing about the hire pens though because although I have six pens of my own, they're all dwarf pens, which I couldn't use if ever I had a Robo that I wanted to show.
