Lightbulb Guide to showing hamsters?

Would anyone be able to write a kind of guide to showing hamsters on this forum? I feel like it's a real guesswork topic with little available information online (believe me I have looked). I also think it's something that Hamster Central lacks in (the only thing) seeing as there is a hamster show section but little information available in it apart from show announcements.

I'm sure there are others like me who want to get into showing but don't know how and there are plenty of people on here who exhibit or even help to organise them and regularly attend.

Please please please could there be a guide to showing hamsters on here (preferably stickied).

I do have some ideas for what could be included:

How to enter and who to contact?
What is benching and how do you bench your hamster?
What are they judged on?
What is each class for?
Which classes can you enter?
How should I bring my hamster?
What will my hamster be in during the show?
What do I do when I get to the show?
What should be in the show pen?
Where can I get a show pen?
How long is the show?
What can I do while my hamster is being judged?
What should I do after the show?

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much Fluffagrams! It's so helpful . I have one question though: do I need to trim my hamster's nails for the show?

Thanks again

For some reason Dwarf nails seem to need trimming more than Syrian nails so I tend to check the nails of mine a day or two before a show and give them a trim if necessary.

The judge will look at the nails in both the main show and pets so it's always worth checking them before a show.

Ok thank you Fluffagrams. His nails are looking a little long so I will see if I can arrange to have his nails clipped at the vet (I will be using a different vet for my hamster and guinea pigs as Jasper's breeder, Tufty Fluff, highly recommended a local vet).

What a great idea thanks for posting this! I am hoping to get involved in showing and possible judging in the future and have done a bit of research but this will be great help thank you.

Fantastic post about showing hams there Fluffagrams! I might show the Robos once they're used to being handled - I'd take Willow too but she gets horribly stressed about travelling

If you're interested in learning more about judging it's worth seeing if there are any opportunities for Stewarding once you've been to show or two. It's a great way of getting a closer look at what kind of things the judges are looking at and since I've been Stewarding I've learnt how to look at hamsters a little bit more objectively.
