Question Entering a hammy in the Andover Hamster Show

Hi everyone

So I'm getting my hamster soon and I have always planned on showing him, however I don't know which category to enter him in and if I can do more than one. I'm not sure how to enter either. What pen should I use and where can I get one? As well as this, I get him on the 5th June and the show is on the 11th. Would it be ok to enter him at that age? He is a pedigree from TuftyFluff. This is a link to a picture of his litter that Sue sent me. You need to copy and paste it. Hopefully it works.

I would really appreciate any tips and links to articles about showing. Also this is the link to the schedule: https://hamsters-uk.org/media/Schedu...%20Andover.pdf

Thanks

Which class and which pen/carrier you show your ham in depends on whether you want to enter into the main class or the pet class. For the pet class you only have to be at the show for part of the day and can enter him in your own carrier. For the main class you have to be there all day (from 9.45am to 5pm or thereabouts) and you'll need to hire a show pen.

Unfortunately I couldn't get the link to work so I don't know which main class he'd go in.

The SHC has more info on showing and which classes to choose here:
A Guide to Showing your Hamster

I've also written my own info on showing here:

If still in doubt you can always email the show secretary listed on the show schedule. You can find the show schedule on the National Hamster Council website.

Hi Vectis

Thanks so much for your reply. The links were really helpful. I believe my hamster will be a male pearl but I'm not 100% sure. Sorry my link didn't work.

Could I enter both the pet class and main class? I've read all the links that you gave me but I'm still not sure if that was mentioned. Also how long is the pet class roughly?

The only thing that concerns me is if my hammy will be too young to enter. He will be six weeks and a day old. If I get him about a week before, will it be too stressful for him to go to the show? The journey will be about an hour and a half for me.

Thanks

You can't enter the same hamster into pet class and the main class on the same day. Pet class starts at 2, you have to be booked in before it starts and usually lasts 1-2 hours depending on how many entries there are. For main class you have to have your hamster on the bench by 10am and you can't touch or move them until judging finishes which is usually about 5pm. If you ask when you pick up your Hammy I am sure she will tell you which main class he can go in.

Ok thanks CharlieB. I think I'm gonna stick with the pet class.

I just need to know from someone that my hammy will be ok at 6 weeks old and having him for only a week. I don't want to stress him out.

Thanks

If you've only had him a week it might be a bit much but pet class is easier on the hammies than main class for the first time. They are judged on temperament though so why don't you wait and see. if he's chilled and relaxed as a baby at home then bring him along (more advantage is entering on the day for pet class) but if he is struggling to settle in then the journey and the day will only make that worse.

Thanks so much. I will see how he settles in. Hopefully, he will be calm and tame already, coming from Tufty Fluff. Fingers crossed.

Last question: What needs to be in his pen (P@H Small Wire Cage AKA Travel cage)? Muesli? Bowl? Wheel? House? Toys? Bedding? Water bottle? Veggies? Treats? etc

Thanks

He'll get some points for environment so food, water or veggies, toys and house are all good things to have. For car safety, I'd take the toys out for the journey and pop them in when you get there as well as any bowls you want to bring

I've never heard of points for environment but I'll give it a go. As it's my first ever show, could someone else confirm the environment points (not that I don't believe you, just never heard it before)? I've certainly got plenty of toys (my dad will never forgive me lol).

Do I have to use woodshavings as substrate or can I use carefresh (travel cage is set up for my hammy's adoption already with carefresh lol)? Where can I buy safe shavings cos I'm concerned about the phenols?

Thanks
