Default Pet Class Awards

I notice that as well as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the Pet Class there are other prizes awarded which are indicated with a R, VHC, HC and a C in the show results and I wanted to know what these prizes actually meant.

I assume that the VHC is Very Highly Commended with the HC meaning Highly Commended and the C just meaning Commended but what does the R mean?

With these other titles does it mean that they're not quite up to the same standard as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd titles but are still at a very good standard or can a pet be awarded 1st place and VHC?

R is reserve or 4th
They are all separate awards and in order of place are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Reserve (4th) VHC very highly commended (5th), HC highly commended (6th) and C commended (7th)
There can be more than one of the lower awards given out if they are 'equal' on judging them on tameness and condition. The judge would also look at the carrier / cage that the hamster was presented in to ensure the owner had provided some food, a source of water like some cucumber, some bedding and a form or enrichment like a chew stick or a cardboard tube to chew. They would also check there was nothing unsafe like fluffy bedding.

Thanks.

If I entered May, I wouldn't be entering her in her cage as it's too big and I was wondering if it would be okay to enter her in a small old fish tank or whether it would be better to enter her in a proper carrier?

I think a decent carrier would be easier myself. When I judge pets it is ever so nice if you can access and get the hammie out with ease. Hamsters in their own cages and sleeping in their nest huts can very very tricky to encourage out to look at! A nice big lid and a pile of soft tissue bedding makes it easy to see the hammy and ensure they know you are coming and will be lifting them up.

Hi Fluffagrams. You have all you need from Soufflés experience. However from the beginners point of view I hope I can add. I went to the Andover show in June with my daughter Dusty. She entered 12 week old Jarvis ( see the thread for this show where we posted photos) and we had never been to a show before. Before going I watched the clip on the NHC website of a judge doing a pet class where he comments on each one and scores them. That told us how to set up the carrier and what to expect. Huge help. Jarvis is a sweetie and won 2nd on his first outing so being a novice made no difference!
