Question Buying hamsters at shows

Hello! I've never been to a hamster show before, but I'm tentatively thinking about buying a new hamster after losing my girl River, and want to know what my options aside from P@H are. I've looked into breeders and rescues etc - but what can I expect to happen if I go to a hamster show? As in, what sort of hamsters tend to be for sale: ages, are they expected to be bred or shown (as I am certainly not interested in breeding... showing perhaps), prices, etc. I don't know, I've just never been to one! Any help greatly appreciated.

I went to the Bath show in July and was surprised at the range of hamsters for sale. At the Bath show they were all supposed to be under the age of 10 months old but older than 5 weeks however different hamster clubs may have different rules. It's worth having a look at the post that Souffle posts about each show as it'll explain any specific rules there.

Prices can vary, I saw some for a donation only and others had a specific price on them but I didn't see any that exceeded the price you see in some pet shops. They'll come with any relevant paperwork but I don't think it is expected that you'll breed them and I can't see why they'd object to you buying one just as a pet.

Every show has a sales secretary and all sales must be booked in to them prior to the show so if you were looking for a particular type of hamster then it might be worth getting in touch with them to see what has been booked in. Their contact information is usually listed with the rest of the show information.

Thank you so much Fluffagrams, that's incredibly helpful info! I'm thinking of going to the Rotherham one so I'll get in touch closer to the time.
