Hamster Photos from shows? any volunteers?

Ive been thinking about this the past couple days ever since we had the discussion of Carmelo’s and Gwen’s colorations. Then when I saw PH won junior best in show with bailey I decided to post my idea.

Ive been wanting to put together an article with pictures showing syrian hamsters and dwarf hamster coat colors and names. I understand there are always new colors showing up, but it would be nice to have a collection of pictures showing common coat color types. I find many people want to know what color their hamster is as far as the technical show term goes. It would be nice to have a picture referance.

Would it be possible to have volunteers donate pictures of their hamsters who know the color type? Or would it be possible to have some of you that attend shows regularly to ask breeders if they would mind allowing a picture of their hams to be taken and donate to the HC site for a reference page of color types?

I have no other way of acquiring photographs of coat color types unless I do a bit of image theft from other websites, which is out of the question of course! Those of you from the UK seem to have a better resource then those of us from the US, I would appreciate if I could get some help in putting this project together. I think it would be great to have on HC!

We are on a mission Candace. We will get pics of as many as possible when we go to shows which is about once a month.

That’s awesome souffle! I have a hard time gathering some information together for HC because for one I’m still not that experienced with hamsters. I know the basics and that’s about it.

Like the article I’ve always wanted about hamster genetics that I cant see to get written! And with this project, unless I have some dedicated helpers it would be pretty much impossible for me to do it.

I’m just looking for common coat colors. Id just need a basic picture that shows the colors and then I need to know the correct name of the color and what features define it as that color. Ill probably arrange is as a table of some sort, with a description and image.

Pophammy would be delighted to write up a colour standard and description for each colour type if you want. It will take a while to collect the info but we will go 'one ham at a time' so to speak!

Sure! if Pophammy doesnt mind doing some writing that would be just fine! I understand it might take a while to collect pictures and write out info, but please keep me updated in the process!

I am going to a Judging Seminar this weekend so will take loads of photographs
We will be looking at good and bad examples of many colours
I have a large amount of combination colours in the Hamstery just now rather than lots of Standards but will send you pictures of my guys if appropriate too.

I could never have worked out what my Umbrous Rust Satin Tort was without knowing her background....

Thanks babyboos! Standard isn't as important to me for this article, I'm more interested in just showing different hamster colors and what the names of those colors are. But whatever information and pictures you can provide would be wonderful! I look forward to seeing this article come together!

I think this is a great idea and if nothing else, gives people visiting or joining HC a chance to see what variety/coat type their hamster is. This will be a nice addition to the other articles already featured, I'm sure.
