Smelly Hamster
Well,...I'm pretty new to owning hamsters, I guess.
I recently got a new hammy, a Fancy Dwarf Hamster,...
August 14 2010 so I've had her a little under a week I think.
After waiting 2 days for her to get used to her new habitat before handling her, to reduce stress, I finnaly held her, but, its been maybe a day or two,..and she has a pretty strong odor, now that I didnt smell before.
After just losing my first Russian Dwarf Hamster, Koishi to wet-tail, after owning her for a long 1 year and 8 months.
I'm very,...paranoid.
Because supossedly a strange odor is a symptom of wet tail,
but Mika, my new hammy, is dry, and active.
I read something about Syrians and their scent glands secreting something but I was just brushing through google,
is there a specific spot a Dwarf hamsters scent glands are located?
Havent found anything on Dwarfies.
Because just yesterday there was a yellow spot on Mikas white coat, between her little shoulder blades, just behind her head,
assuming it was a lttle bit of pee.
Because its gone now.
But, do young Fancy Dwarf Hamsters generally have a strong scent emitting from them?
Or could it be the start of wet-tail?
Possibly Scent Glands?
>u<" I'm kind of new to this......
Sorry, I'm a tad paranoid too,...XP
But thats because I just love my hammies alot, and worry about their health. :3
(aaaand I also just joined today, so I'm still kind of navigating the site.)

Re: Smelly Hamster
Dwarf hamsters do not get wet tail Tasuki as it is a Syrian disease.
The can get diaorrhoea sometimes though and this can be due to food change or too much veggies.
The scent glad in a dwarf is on the tummy - in about the tummy button position. It is not very noticeable in females but in males it can be quite yellowish and raised and stain the fur. Scent glands can get infected so need watching closely.
The dwarfs and 'fancy dwarfs' (which I guess means he has a specific colouring?) can be prone to diabetes and this makes them drink and wee a lot so you could be smelling the urine which has a strong smell. She may just be settling in thogh and perhaps weeing in bed and sleeping in it!
There is an article in the WIKI about testing and diet modification if your hammy tests positive.

Re: Smelly Hamster
like souffle said she may just be sleeping in her own pee. buy her some chinchilla sand that she can bathe in [make sure its sand and not dust] she will clean herself in this and it should get rid of the smell.

Oh wow, I thought for sure it was wet tail...thank you for correcting that.
thank you very much for telling me all this helpful info. ^u^
..and also where a dwarfs scent gland is.
I'm not quite sure of the difference between the two dwarves, I guess it is a different coat, the 'campells dwarf hamsters at out pet store all have about the same coat...while the 'fancy dwarves' have many different colorations.
Though, I'm not very sure.. XP
Again, thank you so much!

Re: Smelly Hamster
Souffle, do dwarf hamsters not let off a smell when they come into season, like syrians do? Sorry to butt in, but just wondering out of interest!

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the sand, mom has'nt bought it in such a long time.
Yeah, like you and souffle both said, she could've been sleeping in her pee, shes not so smelly anymore, I was just a little paranoid, because Koishi smelled strange when she got sick and passed away,...but hamsters are also smelly sometimes, even when they arent sick. ^u^

Re: Smelly Hamster
Can't say I have actually noticed female dwarfs smelling when in season. Certainly they don't have the strong musky, twiglets smell of a syrian!
