What is the average age hamsters live?

When my dad had this hamster he lived for 1 and a half years and my hamster 8 months old, what is the average age for a hamster and can they suddenly die??

The average lifespan for a syrian hamster is two to two and a half years, but they have been known to live to four. Your hamster wont die suddenly of old age. There are signs your hamster will show as it ages.
