Default Green diarrhoea

My new addition Alfie (a large Campbells male from the animal rescue) has slightly sludgy green diarrhoea. Not profusely, just a small amount - it's not watery, more like a thick paste, but it is bright green!

The rescue say they have not fed him any fresh food in the 2 weeks they've had him, but they are going to check with all the volunteers that work there just in case. I can't think of anything else that causes green diarrhoea apart from too much green food!

He is fine in himself apart from that so I am going to treat it as dietary/stress-induced for now - keep an eye on him, make sure he's taking in enough water (which has probiotics in) and only offer dry food.

If any of the experienced hamster keepers here have any ideas about what else might cause it to be green, let me know!!! The only other green diarrhoea disease I can think of is Newcastle disease in poultry, I'm certain it's not that!

I would guess the same as you.. It sounds like someone was feeding him to many veggie treats. I know that stress can be a cause but I can’t see how stress would cause their droppings to turn bright green?

That is strange. I’m sure he will be fine though, your a good owner and mom Sorry I can’t offer any expert opinion. But Im guessing someone spoiled him:P

Do you have any kind of green chew toy that is died green?

No chew toy, but there are pieces in the hamster mix I've given him that are like small green biscuits, which I saw him eat quite a few of last night. If his old hamster mix didn't have those in (the volunteers there when I picked him up couldn't tell me any more than "normal hamster food") maybe that could have done it - seems quite quick though as he only came home late yesterday afternoon.

I don't think its anything to panic about now - I was handling him before just to check his back end to see if there was any more diarrhoea, he was clean and did a small poop on my hand (lovely!) that was drier and better formed, still green though!

I've remembered another possible cause of green diarrhoea, unlikely in this case, but feeding cannabis can give green diarrhoea. I don't think that's whats happened to Alfie though!

Well I bet it was the green thing is his food, maybe he just liked the way they smelled and ate a bunch at once? I'm glad he seems fine though.

Default Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster poop

To be honest poop often looks greenish in my guys, not bright green though certainly I tend to find these are the poops they eat again, rather than the dark ones which they throw out their enclosure

I hope it is just over indulgence, mixed with new owner, food, water etc. You are doing everything possible Emma I hope it passes quickly

He seemed ok this morning, with no sign of the diarrhoea, thankfully! He woke up when I was rushing about the flat getting ready for uni, and kept pushing his nose through the bars every time I walked past, so cute!

I was thinking maybe it was something to do with the poo they eat again (is it caecal pellets they're called?) as I hadn't actually seen any of the green poos in the cage, he just did quite a lot on my hands, and there was some around his tail. Maybe he's eating it. I haven't seen any kind of green poos before in normal healthy hamsters, but if it's the ones they eat like you said, that'd be expected!

Is it just your dwarves that have greeny poos or the syrians too? Its been quite a while since I've kept campbells (probably 6 years), all my hamsters since then have been Syrians (except for the Robos of course!).

Default Caecal Faecal matter!!

That's the stuff Emma Makes me laugh Caecal Faecal matter, who thought that one up

It is only my Russian Dwarves that have greener "reusable" poops. Syrian poos are either dark brown or black generally.

The caecum is part of the gut, where all the bacteria are that produce the nutrients found in the re-eatable poo, I'm pretty sure (covered this briefly!) so that's probably where caecal comes from.

Sounds like these green poos are his caecal pellets then, they are getting more pellety now. Still don't see any in his cage (though I have noticed some "normal" poos), but each time I handle him, after a few minutes he does some green poos, some squishy and some better formed, and doesn't show any interest in them whilst I'm handling him.
