Scratching hamster

I notice that my hamster scratches a lot after waking up at different parts of the day

Is it normal or okay for hamsters to feel itchy and always scratch?

Thank you! :-D

Re: Scratching hamster

Don't worry, my hamsters do this all the time. :D

One of my hamsters washes his face way too much that the fur on his face become a little wet. He would lick his paws and wash his face rapidly and scratch with his hind legs. I find it cute and funny. I would see him scratch every now and then while playing too.

Also, I don't think they feel itchy, they just love to keep themselves clean and it's normal and natural for hamsters to scratch a lot.

But if you notice your hamster is scratching WAY more than usual, and has flaky or red, irritated skin, or see patches of fur missing, you might want to see the vet. Your hamster may have a skin infection or mites.

Be careful your hamster doesn't have mites which could be causing the scratching, though. Other symptoms include thinning / loss of hair and sore bits on skin (usually caused by the excessive scratching).
Can you see any bits at the base of its fur which look like little bits of dust? Usually dark on light coloured fur and light or silvery on dark fur. You might have to look vey carefully, especially on its rump.
If it has mites, this will need treated. And it's usually a course of treatment. If untreated, it can make your hamster ill.
I would have a look or take it to the vet if the scratching is relly excessive, just to get it checked out and make sure.

My hamster does that all the time. If you notice any fur missing or sore spots, patches of skin... then go to the vet, otherwise its normal hamster behavior.

Yeah scratching is quite normal, as long as the skin and fur looks normal, no sores or baldy bits he should be ok.

You could try changing the bedding if you are worried, as sometimes they can be allergic to the woodshavings.
