Exclamation Covid on Hamster ?

Hello, new user here, from Paris (France).

Did anyone here had recently lost an Hamster because of Covid ?

I am very suspicious about this. My little Roborovski, 2 months old died last week, really quickly. On Friday evening, he was acting as usual, eating and playing.
Saturday evening, he ate his usual food, but looked tired. I took him with me and he slept (for the first time) on my arm.
On Sunday morning, he was staying in his bathroom, eyes closed most of the time. I tried to give him water or food, but he didn't want it. After that, he stayed lying, as he was unable to do anything. He passed away couples hours after that.
The only event i can link to this (but this is only my hypothesis), is my daughter came back at home on friday for christmas holidays and she has been detected positive on covid.
The death seems to occur really quick (less than 48h before, i didn't suspect any symptoms). He already have diarrhea one time, but with lot of water, stop fresh food and some time, he recovered easily. This time nothing similar, very unexpected.

I tend to the covid hypothesis after finding an article on sciencedirect from a german research team who found the Roborovski a good choice on Covid studies because they develop covid "with consistent and fulminant clinical signs" : The Roborovski Dwarf Hamster Is A Highly Susceptible Model for a Rapid and Fatal Course of SARS-CoV-2 Infection - ScienceDirect

So, i am absolutely not certain my Hamster died from Covid, but if it is true, be very careful about this

I have also read that hamsters can catch Covid.
I would say that anyone with Covid should stay well away from hamsters and the hamsters need to be isolated from contact with precautions taken when feeding and watering.

yes, hamsters can get covid, they have been used for testing - there are scientific research papers on it.
whether this was the case here you would have to have testing done, other than that you will never know, but it is a possibility.
I know of one hamster rescue in america that lost a few hamsters all at once and they were getting tested for covid, but I don't know if they got the results back yet.

I didn’t know this. I am also so sorry for your loss. In a way it doesn’t surprise me as it’s well known that hamsters have sensitive respiratory tracts and can catch cold and flu viruses from humans - and Covid is a virus. Which is why hamster owners with colds and flu are often advised to keep away from their hamsters when infected and have someone else put food and water out for a while (I have tended to just wash my hands and have been known to wear a mask when I have a cold, and needed to feed the hamster, even before Covid existed.

It is very sad and in your case this virus is so infectious that protection of the hamster may have been difficult to achieve.

Thank you for posting this and highlighting this. A good reason to keep a hamster cage in a room other than the main living area then - and wearing a mask when going in that room. But it does sound like if they are very susceptible and someone has Covid it may be something that can’t be prevented easily. And of course we also have to take care ourselves.

Thanks for your replies.
In this case, it is really vicious, because you can have Covid, without knowing it as you don't have any symptoms, unlike the flu.
