Hunched back and strange behaviour
Hi, my Russian dwarf hamster Gino, over 3 years old, has been behaving strangely over the past couple of days. He has been hiding in his house crouched over and breathing extremely heavily, for two days he barely came out. He was making squeaking noises and grinding noises when he’s never made noises before. He’s come out of his house today but I’ve noticed he had an extremely hunched back and his testicles (which are usually quite large) have disappeared. He has run on his wheel for a little bit but cannot stay on it because the hunched back is causing his back legs to fail. He’s been eating and drinking today.

I think that he is in pain and you need to take him to the vet asap.

Re: Hunched back and strange behaviour
He is very very old at 3 years old and it does sound like he is dying and yes almost certainly in pain if he is hunched. They do try to keep carrying on, even when suffering. Sadly leaving them to die naturally can take quite a long time sometimes, and meanwhile they are suffering and in pain. Although there are pain meds available they won't touch the pain of, say, cancer, or kidney failure which is often what causes them to decline with age.
The kindest thing would be to help him on his way now so he his free from pain, and ask the vet to put him to sleep. But ring round vets and check that they do gas anaesthesia first as that is the kindest way, and then they just go to sleep and aren't aware of the injection that follows.
If they say they don't do gas anaesthesia first then ring another one. Sometimes they just pass peacefully under the gas anaesthesia.
