Unhappy How can I know if my hamster is in pain?

My hammy Pepper is 17 months old. She broke her leg recently, and I took her to a vet. The vet said he can't do anything to her leg, and surgery can kill her. So he gave us some calcium drops, and said she should rest more and move less, so the broken leg will heal itself.
My little girl acts somehow normal, she eats and drinks well, gets out of her nest to play and even climbs up her small nest.
The only matter is when I try to pet her, or when I catch her in my hand to give her medication, she acts so aggressive and bites me (not too hard).
I don't know if she's in a lot of pain or not... Because the vet said she's probably not because lf her leg's condition, and he didn't prescribed any pain killers.
I don't know how to help my little hammy if she's in pain because where I live, there are not good vets or someone who has worked with hamsters...

Hi and welcome to HC!

I'm very sorry to hear that your hamster broke her leg but unfortunately, accidents do happen no matter how hard we try to keep our hamsters safe.

I would go and see another vet and insist on a prescription for a pain killer because your hamster acts like she is in pain.

I would also advise to handle her as little as possible until her leg has healed. Maybe you could put the medication in some tasty soft food like a bit of baby food, scrambled egg or porridge.

You could lower her second nest to the ground level temporarily to avoid her climbing for now.

I'm not sure about her wheel but i would be inclined to take it out for a week to give her leg a chance to heal. Someone else here may be able to advise you on that.

Wishing her a speedy recovery.
