So yes you will probably know. It sounds like she is still doing hamstery things and our last Syrian was like this right up to the night he died. He would stay in his nest most of the time but came out for his softened food. Then one night didn't take the food and he'd gone.
Look for signs she might be in pain. Ears down all the time. Sitting a bit hunched up. Any signs of suffering as mentioned above like breathing difficulties. Otherwise just keep her comfortable and talk to her now and then.

Its so hard to know- Tully had some scrambled egg last night and crossed to his other bed in the night which is a good sign. My worry is, his back legs walk a bit wide which i worry is an issue with his hips or arthritis and his ears are flat all the time Is this a sign he is in pain? I thought he was just really sleepy! Thanks for your reply- its one of the hardest things to witness

He is eating a tiny bit maybe once a day but i know thats not enough to sustain him. His ears are flat all the time and he never seems to look fully comfortable sleeping. Hes also not responding to us when we take the lid off the cage.
I think i may have just made my decision to have him put down- i would just hate for him to be suffering and for me not to know

Re: When is the End? The Hardest Decision
The ears pressed back can often be a clue that they are uncomfortable or in pain. It happened to our last hamster who would sit hunched in her cage with her ears back, and not responding when we spoke to her. She was less than a year old, but the vet's advice was to put her to sleep. It's a hard decision to make, but the final act of love.

Yes, you just know when the time has come.
Please make sure that the vet gives him a gas anaesthetic before he gives him the injection to make his passing as easy as possible.

They are going to give him the gas anaestethic first- i made sure to check but its protocol there which is really reassuring. This is so difficult!

It is so so hard but you are making this decision because you love Tully. You have given him a wonderful life and now you are helping him to a peaceful end. I really feel for you.

A common misconception I see around still but as mentioned, it is law they have to be anaethetised in the UK before.
I'm sorry time has come for Tully to gain his wings. We have all been there. Sometimes they just love us too much and are afraid to leave us alone so cling on but our act of love lets them know it is ok and they will always be with us in our memories and hearts x
