Unhappy Dwarf Scent Gland Cleaning?

This is the scent gland of my dwarf hybrid Winslow. To me it looks like its plugged/covered over but I am not super experienced with this. My last hamster had a scent gland though she happened to be intersex and never looked like this- I'm unsure if what hers looked like should be comparable to Winslow's.

If it is covered though, how should I go about helping him out? I'd like to avoid going to the vet if possible as it's about a 45 minute drive and our vehicle lacks heating (I live in Canada and its -20 celcius on average). Plus this boy here is about 17 months old and gets pretty stressed out when hes out of his enclosure for longer than ~10 minutes. Though if the vet is what he needs I 100% will not hesitate in taking him there.

It may have got infected, first try bathing it gently with damp cotton wool, you probably won’t get it completely clean in one go so do it gradually, if it continues to look like that then I would get the vet to check it out.
Going to the vet can be stressful but if you put plenty of substrate in the carrier so he can burrow down he should stay warm & calm enough.

Couldn't you contact a vet via video call or email a photo? They may prescribe an antibiotic, if deemed necessary, without having to see your hamster. In the current covid situation this is quite common practice. You'd have to collect it but at least you wouldn't have to worry about upsetting your hamster.

I have no idea why I didn't think of emailing her a picture, it seems so obvious. Thank you! For now I'm going to gently try the q-tip method for a few days but I will draft up a message to the vet if it doesn't work.
