Default Syrian hamster not well - advice needed!

Hi everyone, I need some advice about my 6 month old Syrian hamster Amber. When I got her out a few days ago I noticed she had an upset tummy and some poop on and around her tail area, but she seemed alright in herself running around and wanting to come out of her cage. She had not had any new or fresh food in the couple of days before this. I was worried it might be wet tail so I took her to the vets the next day, the vet checked her over and said she didn’t think it was wet tail as she looked normal and had no temperature. By this point Amber had cleaned herself up as well. Over the last couple of days she’s been very quiet, not coming out of her nest unless I wake her up and although she’s been taking food into her nest I don’t think she’s actually eating much. She also didn’t seem to be drinking so I gave her a small piece of carrot to try and get some water into her. Her poop seemed to be normally formed but softer. I’ve just got her out this evening and her tail is dirty again and the bedding in her nest is also smeared, and the smell is terrible. What could be wrong with her and is there anything I can do until I can get her to a vets again?

I'm sorry to hear that your hamster is unwell.

Hamster's poops don't smell so to get a terrible smell from poops or pee isn't right. I'd get her seen by a vet as soon as possible and in the meantime i would phone the vet and ask for advice.

Cucumber is good for hydration.

When I took a hamster with tummy trouble to the vet for similar problems the vet prescribed a small amount of the carrot flavoured paste meant for rabbits. I don't remember the name of it, but maybe you could mention it to the vet? I hope your little friend feels better soon.

Is it possible that it is a discharge from the female vent. A bad smell is common in females with a womb infection or pyometra. It can affect their digestion as well. I'd have her seen again urgently as it is a serious problem. Suggest this to them. The only cure is to spay the hamster but it depends on how ill she is. Sorry she is going through such a hard time
