Default Hamster Panting and Purple Spots on Stomach

Hi guys,

Hoping you can help as I am getting nowhere with the vets!

My hamster Ellie is 18 months old. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that she was panting a lot more than usual. She is also lethargic but this was happening before the panting and I put this down to old age.

The panting was constant but has started to ease now with painkillers and antibiotics. My concern is now she has these little purple spots on the stomach. They look to be in a pattern but not sure what they are? You'll notice she's lost hair around there as well. She was already losing her but she has lost a lot more in the past week or so.

Any advice would be welcome, thank you!

Does she seem bloated at all?
The purple blotches are behind her nipples there which is why it looks like a pattern. I think she looks to have something going on inside causing pressure in the abdomen which will be pushing against her diaphragm causing the panting. It is harder for her to breathe with this. Most common cause is a pyometra or womb infection and other causes are tumours in bowel, kidneys or reproductive tract and heart failure which causes the fluid to gather in the abdomen. It looks like there may be some bruising behind the skin which is the purple colour which might indicate internal bleeding. These things do not tend to be treatable sadly so you need to watch closely for signs of pain and her going downhill. I'm sorry she is going through this but don't delay having her seen again as Christmas is near and you don't want a critical emergency which is very costly.

In my opinion if she were to become unable to eat and move around and was just lying there but still breathing that would be critical and you would need a vet to release her from any pain urgently. They can linger some time in that situation. What is she currently like? Is she happy and doing hamstery things? A pyometra can sometimes rupture or as toxins build up in the system they do become very ill.
I don't know what she is like currently so I can't really judge however if you have any concerns I would have a recheck as I know our vets are closed from 3 on Xmas eve then emergency only really until the Monday. Emergency out of hours at our vet is £170
consultation!
