Default How would you take an untamed hamster to the vet?

Hello. My hamster is not ill and not in need of a vet touch wood but it has crossed my mind that if I did need to take him to a vet how would I do it with him not being tame yet? He sleeps all day long and gets up around 7 in the evening. Originally I was thinking I could pick up his igloo whilst he was sleeping and pop that in his travel carry case. However I have now made him a bigger cardboard box house with no bottom after realising the igloo was too small for him and I am currently waiting for him to move in to it. So to get him out if I needed to I would have to open the lid of the cardboard house and lift him out with gloves on? Or would I try and coax him out of his front door with a treat in to a cup and then put him in to the travel box with a cup? Luckily he does not need a vet now but I didn't want to wait until he did before making a plan. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

If he were to take ill and you would need to take him to a vet you could scoop him out of his house with gloves on if needed.
I'd take the roof off and wait till he's awake then try and tempt him out and into a mug with a treat first but if that doesn't work i'd lift him out.

Vet visits and administration of medications are emergency type of situations that need to be dealt with without delay because they are in the best interest of the hamster.

I use a tube/tunnel - put it just in front of the house entrance with a smelly treat at the opposite end. They tend to just walk into the tunnel then you can put your hands over both ends of it and lift him out in the tunnel - sometimes they don’t like being scooped. Then put the tunnel down where you want him and let him just walk out. If he’s going straight in a pet carrier you just put one end of the tunnel in the pet carrier keeping your hand over the other end - so he walks into it and can’t back out the other way.

I had this issue with my robo a couple weeks after we got him. He has a little snuggle pouch and I put treats at the back to get him to walk in, then cover the front (so he can’t jump out) and place this into his pet carrier. A Syrian might be a bit big for a snuggle pouch, but you could definitely use a tunnel, as Serendipity said. Also make sure they have a bit of cucumber (for hydration) and scatter some food in the pet carrier. I’d also recommend a hide of some sort, just make sure it’s lightweight (cardboard or grass work well) and bedding deep enough to dig in (if the carrier allows it).

Talking about the snuggle pouch has just reminded me if a nicer way of getting them out! Similar idea. I have a fuzzbutts snooze cube (like a pouch but bigger and square. A treat in that and walking into it is much easier to lift out and you can then put the whole thing inside the pet carrier. I’m not sure if they still make them. Last time I looked they had changed the style so the entrance was bigger- I preferred the old style. Again you put your hand over the door - there’s a second door in one corner so I used to have that closed off with a bulldog clip so they couldn’t jump out of the back. It has been brilliant with an older or sick hamster going to the vets as I could just lift the whole snooze cube out of the pet carrier onto the vet table and they had somewhere to retreat to after being examined. I’ll link them. All our hamsters have loved them. I only use them out of the cage so as to supervise. If left in the cage they could be chewed.
