Unhappy Hamster dead or hibernating

I’m not sure where to go with this, I made an account here on impulse. I’ve had my black teddy bear syrian for about a year now, and I’ve only just recently discovered they can go into hybernation ive been doing research for everything but didn’t think about this. Last night before I went to bed he was laying down on top of his bedding, I gave him one of his treats and he nibbled on it and then put his paw on my finger, I thought he was fine. When I woke up he was in the same position, I poked him but he was still so I picked him up and held him in my hand for awhile. I figured he was just hibernating so I left him be for a few hours. I got kind of worried about it and came back to check on him and stared at him for a couple minutes to see if he was breathing. I didn’t know if it was because I was stressed but I couldn’t see anything, I tried feeling and hearing his heartbeat but nothing. I put him wrapped up on a pet heated blanket for over and hour and nothing. His whiskers don’t twitch like some people said, and his under paws look white. I’m not sure if it’s always been there but under his nails it’s slightly red on each. I also found poop and bedding stuck to his butt with pee. Is he dead...? I don’t know what happened I dont want to bury him if he’s alive and can wake up. I’m so sad please help

I am so sorry to hear this. Hibernation is a misnoma with hamsters - it is actually "torpor" and it should be avoided as they rarely come out of it. It's something they are wired to do in the wild, like dormice, to survive a cold period without needing to eat, but even a lot of dormice die and don't come out of hibernation and it's normal for them.

If a hamster gets too cold they can go into torpor and it is quite dangerous. You have done the right thing gently warming him up. Sometimes they come round but still may not survive.

I am not sure how to tell if he is still alive or not but a bit more time may tell. You could keep gently warming him. Souffle knows how to tell.

It may not be hibernation/torpor - he could have been unwell - they can be born with congenital things such as a weak heart. If you think he got a bit cold then it could be torpor.

Hello,

Im sorry you are going through this. Bluntly speaking, if your hamster has passed on then he will be quite stiff and ridged after a few days.

You can place a mirror under their nose to see if it slightly steams up but a hamster in hibernating or near hibernating state will be more drowsy acting.

It sounds sadly like your little one has moved on to the bridge if he isn't responding to heat and being gntly massaged in your hands

How are you doing? It is such a shock when these things happen. Assuming your little one has passed away - so very sorry. Big hugs.

It could have been anything really and not necessarily temperature related.
