Default Hamster Squeaking When Waking Up!?

Hello Everyone!

So Bow is a 1yr and 7months old Syrian Hamster. She first squeaked around a week ago, when she woke up to go to her sand bath to pee (I somehow managed to litter train my girl &#129402 and heard her squeaking. I panicked thinking because she was up so early and now also squeaking that she was in pain or poorly. I checked her over and she is completely fine. She’s done this every day now for the past week, she wakes up and as she comes out her nest has a couple of squeaks. I’ve checked her every single time for a possible chipped tooth, injury or some kind, listened for any sort of breathing issue, and generally just looked her over. She is fine as far as I’m aware and is otherwise in perfect condition. She’s incredibly active for an almost 2 year old!

I guess given all that I shouldn’t really be worried, but, she is only my second hamster and technically my first as Buddy only lived for three days... 😞 Anyway, I phoned my closest small animal Vet and they did say if she’s otherwise normal and healthy, there is really no point in stressing her out by going a 2 hour drive for what sounds like nothing. I agree that I don’t think it’s in Bow’s best interests to be forced into her travel cage for 2 whole hours but I guess I just wanted all of your opinions please?

Hello,

My advice, and this is just my opinion, she sounds like she might be in pain when she is peeing. If it seems unusual for her to be squeaking while/after peeing every single time that might be a sign to go to the vet. Does she have any discharge coming from her bum or smell to her pee? Are her poops normal? Any bloating in her tummy?

I know it is a two hour drive, but if it is an infection you want to get that treated as early as possible. If you do end up going to see the vet ask them for a urinalysis or to test her pee for an infection. Does she have any discharge or Again, that is what I would do if it were my hammy because my little one means so much to me and I wouldn't want her to be in pain.

Any thoughts from others?

It may not hurt to do a course of antibiotics and metacam, your vet might do it without seeing your hamster, just send you the prescription- you would need to weigh her for the right dose. Might be a urine infection although polo just had one and didn’t squeak but I could see a little blood in her pee.

Thank you so much for reading and your thoughts! I really should have explained more, I absolutely would take her to the Vets immediately if she was squeaking every time she peed. However, she doesn’t! It’s only her routine per at 1pm, she wakes up and squeaks while still in her nest, it’s almost as if she is grumpy at waking up so early? She doesn’t squeak at any other point of the day, or any other time she is peeing. There’s no discharge whatsoever and her pee smells normal, her poops are fine and there’s also no bloating.

I may still make an appointment for her as I really don’t want her to have an infection going on, thank you so so much again.

Ahh! I see. Well that is good that she is not squeaking every time she pees and that everything else looks normal! Maybe she is just vocal in the mornings but yes a vet check would never hurt if she needed it ! I wish you and her the best <3
