hamster oldie advice please
i have a female hamster who was 3 last month. her health has been going downhill. she stopped using her wheel and just pottered about in her barney cage. for a week she has not eaten or drank. she is not snuggled in her nest but lying on top of it in her house. she is breathing fast.
i got her out to do a health check and i can't find anything wrong. she then just curled up in my hand. i put her on my sofa and she crawled a couple of steps then stopped. i tried feeding her and giving her water but she turned away even with a teaspoon or syringe.
vet said she is at the end and is shutting down. that i should just check her everyday. the stress of vet visit would kill her anyway.
my other hamsters died overnight one was 2 and the other one was 3 when he died last month. it feels cruel. am i doing the right thing.

Re: hamster oldie advice please
Hi, sorry to hear you are going through this. My hamster Star was near/probably 3 when she was at the end, she was too much of a fighter and wouldn't give in, her lungs were filling with fluid and it wouldn't have been nice, It was kinder to take her to the vets and for them to help her on her way. In all honesty I should have done it a few days sooner but I just kept thinking she would go in her sleep.
Now having said that, every hamster is different, but maybe if you are feeling it is cruel you could speak to your vet again and see what they say.
Is she cold/clammy to touch? Have you tied feeding her a pea and a slice of cucumber, or is she past all of that?

I'm sorry you're having to go through that. It's must be really hard to see her like that. I hope the vet has some good advice.
