I have to give my hamster antibiotics and I'm scared of messing it up!!

I'm so happy and proud of Peggy I could cry. Fifth time of giving her the medicine and it was so easy and she didn't fuss at all and now I feel foolish for getting so worked up.

I thought I would post an update for anyone who is interested. I gave Peggy her last dose of medicine this morning and her sniffles have cleared up and it actually wasn't too bad to give it to her in the end. She still doesn't like being picked up but she didn't seem too stressed and didn't bite me. Once I was actually holding her she seemed calm. In a funny way this whole thing may end up being a good thing (apart from being £50 poorer than I was a week ago!) I used to feel really nervous about handling her, but now that I've had to do it and nothing bad happened I feel much more confident. Thank you to everyone who gave advice, I'm sure Peggy appreciates it too!

So glad that went well. You're not foolish at all being so concerned about it - it's very nerve wracking and also we don't want to cause stress to our hamsters. I will remember the blob of banana method! Yes it may have helped with bonding between you with the regular dosing if it went well (and we fear the opposite of course - if it doesn't go well!). But also she was maybe in pain before and hence reluctant to be picked up or a bit nippy.

Do keep us posted about Peggy - you could maybe start and thread for her under the species section

I was nervous too when i had to give our late Henry his medication and felt ever so guilty about having to wake him up. We often think of the worst case scenario and its such a relief when everything turns out well.

I had to laugh though that Peggy was as good as gold for the vet. Maybe she sensed that the vet meant business and there was no way getting out of.

Is there a photo of Peggy somewhere here on the forum i have missed? I'd love to see one.

Don't feel foolish, i think most of us have been there at some point with our hamsters.

I agree re the bonding, My syrian Twinkle had a horrific accident and afterwards when he had recovered he was so much tamer. I do not recommend anyone go through that just to bond with their hamster though
