Advice on the new bedding I added for my hamster
Hello, to be short today I bought a package of dried grass and hay for my hamster. In the package it says that is for rabbits and hamsters. I added the layer grass on top of the soft paper I always used. The little guy was very curious of the grass at the beginning. He even woke up and direclty started smelling, exploring and then playing with it while chewing it sometimes. The thing that worries me a bit is that the smell of the grass is very strong. When I put my nose it feels to me that it might cause issues in his breathing even tho the smell is like real grass but strong. The little guy isn't showing any odd behaviour until now and seems comfortable walking in it than with the paper. Is it dangerous putting it and will it cause problems in his breathing ?

Re: Advice on the new bedding I added for my hamster
I have soft hay in my hamster enclosures and its something theyd have in the wild too. As long as its fresh, soft and dust extracted which a lot are in the UK, it should be fine

As long as there are no sharp or pokey bits and it isn't dusty it should be fine. I know some hay can be stronger than others for smell, especially alfalfa, but typically small pet hay should be perfectly fine.
I would suggest freezing hay before use in the future though just in case there might be any pests in the hay as this does happen sometimes unfortunately.

Re: Advice on the new bedding I added for my hamster
Hi and welcome to HC!
My hamsters also have grass in their habitats as an enrichment but only in one corner or small area like on a shelf. I wouldn't put a whole layer in it and i remove any sharp or stabby bits.

Re: Advice on the new bedding I added for my hamster
With any natural plant material I start with a very small amount & see how they get on then add more if they enjoy it but I would keep it to one area of the cage.
Ad well as removing any sharp bits it’s a good idea to freeze it for at least a week to avoid any chance of mites or other tiny bugs that could be in it.

Re: Advice on the new bedding I added for my hamster
I learned a lot of stuff and Im glad that the grass won't do any harm to him. I'll be sure to start with only a corner and freeze it first. And make sure that there aren't any harmful bits of hay. Thanks a lot for the replies guys.
