Default Hamster ‘Bleeding’

Age: 17months
Gender: F
Species: Hybrid Dwarf

5pm yesterday my hamster was in a plastic play tub I use to sit her in while she is out and give her treats etc. She was nibbling a piece of egg when I suddenly heard her spluttering. I looked up and she had ‘blood’ coming from her nose running all down her front. The ‘bleeding’ lasted for maybe a minute and then stopped.

I took her to the vet and he couldn’t see any visible reason for the ‘bleeding’ and suggested maybe she’d bumped her nose. Personally as she was right in front of me when she started ‘bleeding’ and I didn’t see her bump it I find that unlikely.

She was fine for the next 27 hours and then suddenly when getting food from her food bowl she started ‘bleeding’ from her nose again. It lasted no more than a minute again and stopped.

She is eating, drinking, tunnelling, running around her cage being her usual self, No weight loss yet.

She is making the occasional squeak (I can’t work out if they are coughs or sneezes) and she is shivering a little.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Anyone know what I can do to help her?

Hamsters can actually get nosebleeds like us!

Causes are, but not limited to:
•stress
• bump to the face
• dry air (which dries out the nasal passages)
• repeated sneezing from dust or resp irritation.

What substrate are you using?

Have you checked the humidity in the room? Central heating can dry the air out which in turn dries skin out. Aim for the humidity to be about 50%.

I wouldn't say she was stressed nor did I see her bump herself.

She has Kaytee bedding and it's always been either that or Carefresh.

Humidity idk I don't have a way of measuring it. That may be something to look at since the central heating is on.

My main concern at the moment is how many of these bleeds she can have without getting really poorly.

Are her claws ok, if they get too long she could have caught one in her nose, even if not it’s possible she could have scratched herself.
I’ve never come across a spontaneous nose bleed in a hamster before so I’m really not sure what else it might be.

You say she was eating on both occasions when this happened. I wonder if she might be allergic or intolerant to something? Alternatively, if she spluttered / choked a little on something, that might have caused the sudden bleeding. As she has been checked by your vet and nothing has been found, perhaps just keep an eye on her for now and see if it happens again.

Todays report so far...
One of her eyes seems to be stuck shut.
No sign of bleeding overnight in her bedding nor on her so far *fingers crossed*
Still active, eating, drinking etc just a little grumpy because I keep waking her to check on her everytime she squeaks.

Do you think maybe with a gunky eye as well tht she could be battling a cold or chest infection?

None of her claws look too long but It's possible she caught her face.

I haven't changed her food type for a long time (Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream base and a few extra bits mixed in) and she has had egg many times before without issue. Choking is possible I guess.

Eyes getting stuck shut are quite common & can be caused by a few things, sometimes it’s dusty substrate or something in the cage, sometimes it’s just a bit like a sleepy eye that seems to happen for no obvious reason, a respiratory infection is possible, did the vet check her breathing & chest when you saw them? Teeth problems can impact on the eys & nose too so that would be another thing to check out.
