The vet still thinks her bleeds is part of her infection, but if she does get worse to get an ultrasound done. The vet thinks that because she is still eating and drinking and has energy to move around but slowly that the antibiotics just need time to kick in. They are also giving her an anti-inflammatory to help with the pain. I will keep monitoring her and take her back if anything changes.

Exclamation Re: Need Help For Senior Hammy

Hello everyone,

I don’t know if the antibiotics are working and things are getting worse. Today when I went to check on her her eye right was bulging out of her head and was filled with blood. I immediately took her in but could this be part of the infection? Did I make it worse? I feel like I’m not helping her and I don’t know what to do. I do have an ultrasound booked for tomorrow I’m just not sure what’s going on.

The eye sounds quite urgent to me. Unless your vet finds a treatable cause for this then I think I would consider helping her on her way as it sounds like she may be suffering. It could possibly be a tumour causing a number of things. The ultrasound may show this. I hope your vet can help with diagnosis and advise as to where to go from here.

Unhappy Re: Need Help For Senior Hammy

It might be time to put her down. Her other eye is now bulging. Earlier today at the vet when it was only her right eye, the vet said she could do surgery to remove the eye or just let it die on its own. Now that both eyes are swollen and it happened so fast, I think it might me worse than just glaucoma or an eye infection/UTI like originally thought. Any thoughts? I don’t want her to suffer in pain or be frightened anymore. She’s been through so much. But she does still eat and drink and she still runs on the floor like she wants to be here. I’m just so uncertain of what to do.

I’m really sorry you’re having to see your ham go through all this, she does have a lot going on & it’s hard to see how some of these things are related, I’m sure you haven’t made things worse by following the vets advice & giving the antibiotics but fI would be very concerned about her eyes, she must be in a great deal of pain, even with the pain meds I would imagine she’s still in some pain, her eyes could possibly rupture which would be extremely painful for her.
It can be hard when we see them trying to keep going but that is their nature, to hide pain & illness & try to continue to do whatever hamstery things they can.
Only you can decide & your vet should be able to help you with making the right decision for her but you have to consider her quality of life & how much she may be suffering.
It does sound as though it may well be time to help her on her way, better a little too soon than too late I always think, I know how hard it is to have to make this choice but consider those things carefully & you will know in your heart what’s best for her.

Hello everyone.

I made the decision to put her down. She was suffering and now she can rest in hammy heaven. She can cross over the rainbow bridge now. Goodbye my sweet Willow

So sorry to hear of Willow's passing but you made the right decision to free her from suffering and to let her rest in peace.
