Unhappy Bugs in enclosure

Hi everyone!
I’ve had my Syrian for nearly two years and never had a problem with bugs until recently. When I went to change his water bowl, I thought he had some how flicked sand In it but on closer inspection there were these tiny brown, like really tiny, bugs floating in the water and walking around the bowl. I was googling ferociously to find answers and someone suggested it to be fruit fly larvae. At first I thought it made sense as there were a few fruit flies flying around and I thought they would go away on their own if I kept changing the water every few hours but the bugs came back every time. Then I set up a trap to capture the fruit flies and they’ve been gone for a few days. However I’m still getting those weird, gross brown bugs in his water bowl!! I also tried using a water bottle for a few days instead of his bowl to see if that would help but it didn’t. They appeared again. Does anyone have any advice or know what they could be? Thanks so much. I am going to do a full enclosure change And deep clean, hoping that will sort them out.

Mites are quite common, but you’d normally see them everywhere. Also they don’t fly.

Do the ones in the water bowl have wings? If they do it may just be a case of needing a clean out and probably not from the hamster.

If they don’t then something could’ve been in the hamsters food or bedding, I’m not 100% saying they are mites, but they are common in hamsters.

Also it’s weird you on see them in the water bowl? Maybe do a spot clean briefly or proper clean and just dig up certain parts to see if there are a nest of bugs somewhere, maybe your hamsters just hoarded some food and it’s gone off, in which case they’re just normal bugs and a clean will fix it.

Mites can only be seen under a microscope and live on a hamster causing itching and sore skin which requires a visit to the vet.

A while ago i heard book lice mentioned when someone described small bugs in and around the water bowl so i'd try and look those up to see if that's the ones present in your hamster's cage.

Fruit flies aren't much of a problem and can be removed by removing the source. One of our hamsters had buried a piece of cucumber causing fruit flies so i cleaned out the affected area which sorted the issue.

It is advisable to freeze all food and treats and things like herbs, hay etc for a week. I've done this for a while now but still had to do a cage deep clean the other day when i saw a pantry moth inside a hamster's cage.

Hey everyone thanks for getting in touch to help! The bugs were pretty microscopic and a light beige colour. The deep clean I did with clean and new toys and bedding seemed to solve all the problem. I couldn’t seem to pin point what they were coming from but I think they were mould mites after getting a good lead on google. Thanks both!
