Re: Syrian Scent Glands
You might want to start a new thread (or look for an old one) that is specifically for this topic.
But i will quote this I found on a website "When females are in heat, they have a lot of white vaginal discharge and like cats will keep coming into heat until bred. Hamsters are so called seasonally estrus, but all that means is that they are MORE LIKELY to go into heat during the Spring than at other times of the year."
Females come into heat every 4 days approxitmately x

Re: Syrian Scent Glands
Is it abnormal for the scent glands not to show in an (extremely large) adult male Syrian hamster? I believe he is at least a year old.

Re: Syrian Scent Glands
No elly it will be fine. If no females are around or if the males has differing amounts of hormones they are sometimes not noticeable. Also females and hamsters with less pigment in the skin do not show up as much.

Re: Syrian Scent Glands
He is a male with no female around. He had a female around a few months ago that died (before in my care) I don't remember either of them having noticable scent glands, thanks

Re: Syrian Scent Glands

Re: Syrian Scent Glands
My female 1 year olf hamster has very dark scent glands and when she had irritated skin she was pulling her fur out and itching a lot, so we changed all her bedding and food and toys and the itching has stopped. However, her fur on her scent glands still hasn't fully grown back yet, and it isn't just a tiny little hole like on your photos, they cover the two whole sides of her lower body
I'm worried that something is wrong so please tell me if anything has happened or if it's all fine
Thanks

Re: Syrian Scent Glands
I am baffled by Finleys scent glands, hope you may be able to help. Since I have got my 2 russian boys every few days Finleys scent glands look really wet and greasy but dry up by the next day, I haven't noticed this before, but I haven't had him that long to know if it happened before. I have checked my Boys and im pretty certain they are both males. I also have another Male russian and a Female Russian in different cages 2 shelves above him, this hasnt seamed to of increased the wetness but I only got my Girl Darcy yesterday. His fur is thinning on his back anyway as you can see with the photo, he recently had mite issues but this has all cleared up. The vet thinks his fur loss could be down to him aging (He is also being monitored for being diabetic and a UTI which hasnt completely cleared up after a week of antibiotics but its better) he is now about 1 year 8 months, possibly a bit older but not any more that 2 months younger. Could the new wetness be due to having more hammys close by? Could it be an issue? Im ringing the vet on friday anyway to update them with his progress and any more behaviour changes and to decide where to go with the next test results. Any ideas? He doesnt scratch them or anything and doesnt seam to nibble at them that I can see, he wont let me close enough to have a good look at them but they dont look inflamed

Thank you
